Game Preview: Baseball Hosts Southern Connecticut State for Doubleheader on Sunday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2023) –The Mercy College baseball team hosts regionally-ranked Southern Connecticut State University for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 5th at 12 & 3 p.m. in their home opener.

Last Meeting Against the Owls

Mercy dropped 5-3 and 7-2 decisions to the Owls on March 6, 2022.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         The Mavericks are coming off a 15-0 loss to Le Moyne on February 26th. Mercy was led by senior Nolan Giblin who had a team-high two hits.

·         Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.

·         Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.

·         The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.

·         Leading the returners for the Mavericks are Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting a team-high .343 with a team-high 12 hits to go along with six RBI and seven runs. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has a team-high-tying eight RBI with seven runs.

·         Sanders is hitting .333 on the year with a team-high-tying eight RBI, a team-high one home run along with a team-high nine runs scored. Giblin is hitting .286 with three RBI and four runs scored.

·         Senior Justin Glennerster has five RBI and six runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen is tied for second on the team with seven runs and senior Janiel Ramirez has five RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by junior Ryan Rozinski who has made two starts on the mound with 10 strikeouts in 10 innings. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high 12.2 innings in three appearances with 10 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-0 on the mound with six strikeouts in 9.1 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 7.2 innings in two starts. Junior Gaetano Pennisi has tossed 4.1 innings out of the bullpen with a 2.08 ERA and junior Gabriel Soto has pitched 3.0 innings with a 3.00 ERA.

·         Mercy is hitting .216 as a team through the first 10 games of the season and is pitching to an 8.72 ERA.

Scouting the Owls

·         Southern Connecticut State is coming off a 9-7 loss to Post on February 26th.

·         The Owls were picked second in the NE10 Southwest Division Preseason Poll after going 31-15-1 last season, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.

·         Southern Connecticut is currently ranked No. 4 in the NCBWA East Region Top 10 poll.

·         The Owls are led by Connor Goggin who is hitting a team-high .435 with a team-high eight RBI and 10 hits. Billy Sullivan is second on the team with a .391 average with two RBI and a team-high eight runs.

·         Jack Drewry is hitting .333 with six RBI and Mike Ferrett is hitting .263 with four RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by Nick Guarino who is 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 11.0 innings with five strikeouts. Steve Phillips is 1-0 with a 6.23 ERA in 8.2 innings and Peter Phillips has a team-high two wins in 4.1 innings. Tommy Hughes has a team-high two saves.

·         The Owls are hitting .247 as a team and have a 5.47 team ERA.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Tuesday, March 7th when they play at Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
