Game Preview: No. 5/6 Men's Lacrosse Hosts No. 12/15 Seton Hill on Saturday

DOBB FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2023) – The No. 5/6 Mercy College men's lacrosse team hosts No. 12/15 Seton Hill University in their home opener on Saturday, March 4th at 11 a.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off an 18-8 win over Georgian Court on February 22nd. The Mavericks were led by senior Brady Kearnan who had a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists.

·         On Monday, Kearnan and junior Jason Kuehner were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll.

·         Kearnan has a team-high 28 points on a team-high 16 goals and 12 assists with five caused turnovers and 10 ground balls. He recorded his 100th career ground ball against Le Moyne on Sunday and recorded his 100th career goal as a Maverick against Georgian Court. Graduate student Jack Gibbons has 14 goals and four assists on the season and graduate student Thomas Connors is third on the team with 12 points on six goals and six assists. Junior Greg Gibbons has five points on three goals and two assists and senior TJ Heyder has nine goals. Senior Robert Guglielmo has five goals and one assist and junior Andrew Calabria has three goals and three assists. Freshman Devon Duchnowski has three goals and sophomore Ian Votta and freshmen Connor Abrahall and Anthony Barone have two goals.

·         The defense has been led by senior Justin Gerdvil who has a team-high nine caused turnovers with a team-high 16 ground balls. Graduate student Jake Fitzgerald is second on the team with five caused turnovers and senior Zack Higgins has four caused turnovers. Sophomore Daniel Mcloughlin and junior Cristian Castles both have three caused turnovers. Kuehner is 55-of-82 (.671) on faceoffs with 15 ground balls and a goal. Graduate student Tommy Umano is 3-1 in goal with 23 saves, a .479 save percentage and 8.42 goals-against average.

·         Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week and Gerdvil was named Defensive Player of the Week last week. Gibbons was tabbed to the Honor Roll for the second straight week last week.

·         Barone was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week on February 13th and Kuehner was named to the USILA Team of the Week on February 14th.

·         Mercy looks to win their 11th straight home opener.

·         Mercy is 4-6 all-time against Seton Hill but have won three of the last four meetings.

·         The Mavericks are ranked No. 5 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 6 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll. Mercy was ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason for the first time in program history.

·         Mercy was picked to finish first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and graduate student Jack Kipnes was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

·         The Mavericks made their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season and advanced to the National Championship Game for the first time last season. Mercy also won their third straight ECC Regular Season and Tournament Championships last season.

·         Mercy has had 10 straight winning seasons and have qualified for the ECC Championship in seven straight seasons.

·         The Mavericks are 51-7 in their last 58 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·         Kearnan was named to the Inside Lacrosse Player of the Year Watch List on February 10th and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes and Umano were tabbed USILA Preseason All-Americans on February 1st.

·         Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes, junior Tyler Pjatak and Umano were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans on January 27th.

·         Gibbons was named USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Kipnes, Umano and Pjatak were tabbed to the Preseason All-American Teams.

Scouting the Griffins

·         Seton Hill earned a 7-4 win over Chestnut Hill in their last game on February 25th.

·         The Griffins lone loss came to nationally-ranked Indianapolis on February 18th.

·         Seton Hill was picked second in the G-MAC Preseason Coaches Poll after going 13-7 last season. The Griffins qualified for the NCAA Tournament falling to Mercy in the National Quarterfinals.

·         The Griffins are ranked No. 12 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 15 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.

·         Seton Hill is led by Connor Zostant who has a team-high 12 points on five goals and a team-high seven assists. Jeremy Sforzo has a team-high six goals to go along with three assists and Carter Green has three goals and four assists.

·         Vincent Cogliandro and Andy Davis both have four goals and an assist and Demetri Yerou has two goals and four assists. Blake Morrow has three goals and a team-high-tying two caused turnovers and Mark Strunk is 41-of-63 (.651) on faceoffs with a team-high 19 ground balls.

·         Josh Miller is 2-1 in goal with 28 saves, a .560 save percentage and 9.04 goals-against average.
