Game Preview: Baseball Opens ECC Play Against Molloy This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2023) –The Mercy College baseball team hosts Molloy University in their ECC opener on Friday, March 24th at 3 p.m. before playing at Molloy on Saturday, March 25th at 12 & 3 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday, March 26th at 12 p.m. at Mercy.

Last Meeting Against the Lions

Molloy earned a 6-1 win over Mercy in the ECC Championship on May 13, 2022.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         The Mavericks are coming off 3-1 and 13-0 losses to regionally-ranked Pace on Saturday. Mercy was led by senior Nolan Giblin who recorded an RBI in game one.

·         Giblin was named ECC Player of the Week last Monday and junior Ryan Rozinski was tabbed to the Honor Roll.  

·         Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 6th.

·         Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 27th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.

·         Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.

·         The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.

·         Mercy is 16-42 in their last 58 meetings against Molloy.

·         Leading the returners for the Mavericks are sophomore Jaden Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting .278 with a team-high 20 hits to go along with 10 RBI and a team-high 13 runs. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has 10 RBI with 11 runs.

·         Sanders is hitting .270 on the year with a team-high-tying 10 RBI, a team-high-tying one home run along with 10 runs scored. Giblin is hitting a team-high .281 with nine RBI and six runs scored.

·         Senior Justin Glennerster has five RBI and six runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has 10 runs and senior Janiel Ramirez has five RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by Rozinski who has made four starts on the mound with a team-best 4.29 ERA in 21.0 innings with 17 strikeouts. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high 27 innings in six appearances with a team-high 21 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-2 on the mound with 14 strikeouts in 17.0 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 21.0 innings in four starts with a 5.57 ERA. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. has made eight appearances out of the bullpen and has a 3.12 ERA in 8.2 innings with one save. Senior Ryan Dieguez has pitched 8.1 innings out of the bullpen and has a 4.32 ERA. Freshman Diego Wirz pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Bridgeport on March 10th to earn his first collegiate win.

·         Mercy is hitting .233 as a team through the first 19 games of the season and is pitching to a 7.22 ERA.

Scouting the Lions

·         Molloy is coming off an 11-5 loss to No. 24 New Haven on Wednesday.

·         The Lions were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 40-15 last season, winning their most games in program history.

·         Molloy repeated as ECC Champions last season and fell one game short of advancing to the NCAA Division II World Series for the second year in a row.

·         The Lions are ranked fifth in the NCBWA East Region Top 10 poll.

·         Molloy is led a the plate by two-time ECC Rookie of the Week JJ DeVito who is hitting a team-high .360 with a team-high eight stolen bases and 23 runs to go along with six doubles and 14 RBI. Garrett Scavelli is hitting .333 with a team-high-tying 18 RBI and a team-high eight doubles.

·         Jake McCarthy also has a team-high-tying 18 RBI and Aidan Larkin is hitting .325 with 15 RBI and six doubles.

·         The pitching staff is led by ECC Preseason Pitcher of the Year and one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week this season Charlie Cucchiara who is 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 32.2 innings with 31 strikeouts. One-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Brian Morrisey has a team-best 2.03 ERA in 31 innings with a 2-2 record and 18 strikeouts. One-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Mike Andreoli has a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings with 20 strikeouts and a 3-0 record.

·         Molloy has a .292 team batting average and a 4.85 team ERA through 20 games.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Friday, March 31st when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
