Game Preview: No. 2/4 Men's Lacrosse Plays at D'Youville in ECC Matchup on Sunday

DOBB FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2023) – The No. 2/4 Mercy College men's lacrosse team plays at ECC foe D'Youville University on Sunday, March 26th at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 14-12 win over RV Bentley on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Andrew Calabria who had a game-high seven points and by graduate student Tommy Umano who made a game-high 17 saves.

·         On Tuesday, junior Jason Kuehner was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week.

·         On Monday, Connors and juniors Brody Caskenette and Kuehner were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll.

·         Last week, senior Brady Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week for the third time and senior Justin Gerdvil was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·         On March 6th, Gerdvil and Heyder were both named to the ECC Honor Roll. Gerdvil was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week for the second time on March 7th.

·         On February 27th, Kearnan and junior Jason Kuehner were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll.

·         Kearnan has a team-high 42 points on a team-high 24 goals and 18 assists with seven caused turnovers and 16 ground balls. He recorded his 100th career ground ball against Le Moyne, recorded his 100th career goal as a Maverick against Georgian Court and recorded his 200th career point as a Maverick against Wilmington. Graduate student Jack Gibbons has 25 goals and eight assists on the season, recording his 100th career goal against Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday. Graduate student Thomas Connors is third on the team with 30 points on 15 goals and 15 assists. Junior Greg Gibbons has eight points on four goals and four assists and senior TJ Heyder has a team-high 27 goals with three assists. Heyder recorded his 100th career point on Sunday. Senior Robert Guglielmo has six goals and four assists and Calabria has nine goals and 10 assists. Caskenette has seven goals and two assists and freshman Devon Duchnowski has six goals. Sophomore Ian Votta has four goals and two assists.

·         The defense has been led by Gerdvil who has a team-high 23 caused turnovers with a team-high 41 ground balls. Graduate student Jake Fitzgerald is second on the team with 10 caused turnovers and senior Zack Higgins has five caused turnovers. Junior Tyler Pjatak has eight caused turnovers and two goals and graduate student Jack Kipnes has eight caused turnovers and 22 ground balls. Kuehner is 111-160 (.694) on faceoffs with 31 ground balls, two assists and two goals. Graduate student Tommy Umano is 7-1 in goal with 73 saves, a .521 save percentage and 10.24 goals-against average.

·         Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week and Gerdvil was named Defensive Player of the Week on February 20th. Gibbons was tabbed to the Honor Roll for the second straight week on February 20th.

·         Barone was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week on February 13th and Kuehner was named to the USILA Team of the Week on February 14th.

·         Mercy is 1-0 all-time against D'Youville with the first meeting taking place last season.

·         The Mavericks have won 22 straight games against ECC competition, with their last loss coming in the 2018 ECC Championship Semifinal.

·         The Mavericks are ranked No. 2 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 4 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll. Mercy was ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason for the first time in program history.

·         Mercy was picked to finish first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and graduate student Jack Kipnes was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

·         The Mavericks made their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season and advanced to the National Championship Game for the first time last season. Mercy also won their third straight ECC Regular Season and Tournament Championships last season.

·         Mercy has had 10 straight winning seasons and have qualified for the ECC Championship in seven straight seasons.

·         The Mavericks are 55-7 in their last 62 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·         Kearnan was named to the Inside Lacrosse Player of the Year Watch List on February 10th and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes and Umano were tabbed USILA Preseason All-Americans on February 1st.

·         Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes, junior Tyler Pjatak and Umano were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans on January 27th.

·         Gibbons was named USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Kipnes, Umano and Pjatak were tabbed to the Preseason All-American Teams.

Scouting the Saints

·         D'Youville is coming off a 26-5 loss to Molloy on Saturday.

·         The Saints were picked seventh in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 0-11 last season.

·         D'Youville is led by one-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week Tristan Engelhardt who leads the ECC with 33 goals and 48 points. Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week Stefano Evan is second on the team with 36 points on 25 goals and 11 assists. He also has 24 ground balls and one-time ECC Rookie of the Week Brady Ruffalo has 24 points on 19 goals and five assists.

·         Steven Lucas is fourth on the team with 21 points on 12 goals and nine assists. Cameron Fogarty has a team-high eight caused turnovers and Jordan Brown has a team-high 65 ground balls. Brown is 160-of-305 (.525) on faceoffs.

·         Reece Eck is 2-5 in goal with 88 saves, a .444 save percentage and 17.33 goals-against average in eight starts.
