Game Preview: Baseball Faces St. Thomas Aquinas in ECC Action This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2023) –The Mercy College baseball team plays a doubleheader at ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday, March 31st starting at 11 a.m. The Mavericks will then host the Spartans for a single game on Sunday, April 2nd at 12 p.m. and on Monday, April 3rd at 3:30 p.m.

Last Meeting Against the Spartans

Mercy earned 4-2 and 3-1 wins over the Spartans on April 23, 2022.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 17-4 loss to Molloy on Monday. The Mavericks were led by freshman John Nisco who had a team-high two RBI.

·         Senior Nolan Giblin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Giblin was named ECC Player of the Week on March 13th and junior Ryan Rozinski was tabbed to the Honor Roll.  

·         Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 6th.

·         Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 27th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.

·         Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.

·         The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.

·         Mercy is 18-42 in their last 60 meetings against the Spartans but have won the last two meetings.

·         Leading the returners for the Mavericks are sophomore Jaden Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting .292 with a team-high 26 hits to go along with 12 RBI and a team-high-tying 15 runs. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has 12 RBI with a team-high-tying 15 runs.

·         Sanders is hitting .282 on the year with a team-high-tying 12 RBI, a team-high-tying one home run along with 11 runs scored. Giblin is hitting a team-high .309 with 10 RBI and eight runs scored.

·         Senior Justin Glennerster has six RBI and six runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has 12 runs and senior Janiel Ramirez has five RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by Rozinski who has made five starts on the mound with a team-best 5.54 ERA in 26.0 innings with 21 strikeouts. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high 29 innings in seven appearances with a team-high-tying 21 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-2 on the mound with 14 strikeouts in 17.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 26.1 innings in five starts. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. has made 10 appearances out of the bullpen and has a 3.38 ERA in 10.2 innings with one save. Senior Ryan Dieguez has pitched 9.1 innings out of the bullpen and has a 4.82 ERA. Freshman Diego Wirz pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Bridgeport on March 10th to earn his first collegiate win.

·         Mercy is hitting .247 as a team through the first 23 games of the season and is pitching to an 8.44 ERA.

Scouting the Spartans

·         St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off a 12-7 loss to Pace on Wednesday.

·         The Spartans were picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 23-23 last season overall and 14-7 in ECC play.

·         STAC is led at the plate by Sean Lynch who is batting a team-high .375 with nine RBI, five stolen bases and seven runs scored. Andrew Guerra is hitting .333 with 11 RBI, two home runs and 10 runs and Nick O'Connor is hitting .316 with 14 RBI, eight stolen bases and 18 runs scored.

·         Gregory DiGiaro has a team-high 17 RBI and four home runs with 16 runs and C.J. Cumbo and David Potenza both have 10 RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by Aaron Dona who has a team-best 4.35 ERA in 31 innings with a 3-1 record and 50 strikeouts. John Archer is 2-2 on the mound with a 4.91 ERA in 25.2 innings with 17 strikeouts and Andrew Alameda is 3-1 with a 5.00 ERA in 27 innings with 21 strikeouts. Mateo Reyes has pitched 12 innings out of the bullpen and is 1-1 with two saves, a 3.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts.

·         The Spartans are hitting .271 as a team and have a 5.65 team ERA.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Thursday, April 6th when they play at D'Youville at 5 p.m.
