Mercy dropped 7-6 and 13-5 decisions to the Owls on March 5, 2023.
Scouting the Mavericks
· The Mavericks are coming off 7-6 and 13-5 losses to Southern Connecticut State on Sunday. Mercy was led by freshman Niko Sorice who homered and had two RBI.
· Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll last Monday.
· Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.
· Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.
· The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.
· Leading the returners for the Mavericks are sophomore Jaden Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.
· Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting a team-high .341 with a team-high 15 hits to go along with nine RBI and a team-high 10 runs. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has nine RBI with nine runs.
· Sanders is hitting .341 on the year with a team-high 10 RBI, a team-high one home run along with nine runs scored. Giblin is hitting .250 with three RBI and five runs scored.
· Senior Justin Glennerster has five RBI and six runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has seven runs and senior Janiel Ramirez has five RBI.
· The pitching staff is led by junior Ryan Rozinski who has made three starts on the mound with 15 strikeouts in 16 innings. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high-tying 16 innings in four appearances with 14 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-0 on the mound with nine strikeouts in 10.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 7.2 innings in two starts. Junior Gaetano Pennisi has tossed 4.2 innings out of the bullpen with three runs allowed and junior Gabriel Soto has pitched 3.0 innings with a 3.00 ERA.
· Mercy is hitting .226 as a team through the first 12 games of the season and is pitching to an 8.58 ERA.
Scouting the Owls
· Southern Connecticut State is coming off 7-6 and 13-5 wins over Mercy on Sunday.
· The Owls were picked second in the NE10 Southwest Division Preseason Poll after going 31-15-1 last season, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.
· Southern Connecticut is currently ranked No. 4 in the NCBWA East Region Top 10 poll.
· The Owls are led by Connor Goggin who is hitting a team-high .433 with a team-high 11 RBI and 13 hits. Billy Sullivan is second on the team with a .406 average with three RBI and a team-high 11 runs.
· Jack Drewry is hitting .276 with nine RBI and Mike Ferrett is hitting .261 with six RBI.
· The pitching staff is led by Nick Guarino who is 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA in 17.0 innings with nine strikeouts. Steve Phillips is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 14.2 innings and Peter Phillips has a team-high-tying two wins in 4.1 innings. Tommy Hughes has a team-high three saves.
· The Owls are hitting .264 as a team and have a 5.51 team ERA.
