Scouting the Mavericks
· The Mavericks are coming off a 6-1 loss to regionally-ranked Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday. Sophomore Frankie Asaro recorded an RBI.
· Junior Ryan Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.
· Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll last Monday.
· Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.
· Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.
· The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.
· Leading the returners for the Mavericks are sophomore Jaden Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.
· Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting .313 with a team-high-tying 15 hits to go along with nine RBI and a team-high 10 runs. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has nine RBI with nine runs.
· Sanders is hitting a team-high .341 on the year with a team-high 10 RBI, a team-high one home run along with nine runs scored. Giblin is hitting .250 with three RBI and five runs scored.
· Senior Justin Glennerster has five RBI and six runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has eight runs and senior Janiel Ramirez has five RBI.
· The pitching staff is led by junior Ryan Rozinski who has made three starts on the mound with 15 strikeouts in 16 innings. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high-tying 16 innings in four appearances with 14 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-0 on the mound with nine strikeouts in 10.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 13.0 innings in three starts. Junior Gaetano Pennisi has tossed 4.2 innings out of the bullpen with three runs allowed and junior Gabriel Soto has pitched 3.0 innings with a 3.00 ERA.
· Mercy is hitting .227 as a team through the first 13 games of the season and is pitching to an 8.28 ERA.
Scouting the Purple Knights
· Bridgeport is coming off a 9-4 loss to New Haven on Sunday.
· The Purple Knights were picked fourth in the CACC North Division Preseason Poll after going 19-28 last season.
· Bridgeport is led at the plate by Justin Leigh who is batting a team-high .361 with four RBI and a team-high 13 hits and eight runs. Michael Fletcher is hitting .279 with two RBI and seven runs and Anthony Pascale has a team-high seven RBI.
· The pitching staff is led by Justin Nyarady who has a 3.00 ERA in 12.0 innings with 11 strikeouts in two starts. Brendan Palmer is 0-1 on the bump with a 3.75 ERA and eight strikeouts in 12.0 innings.
· Tim Dolan and Tyler John each have a save out of the bullpen.
· Bridgeport is hitting .215 as a team and has a 6.90 team ERA through 11 games.
