Game Preview: Softball Takes on Queens and Felician This Week

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2023) – The Mercy College softball team plays at ECC foe Queens College on Thursday, April 13th at 2 p.m. before hosting Queens on Friday, April 14th at 2:30 p.m. The Mavericks conclude the week with a doubleheader at Felician University on Sunday, April 16th at 2 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off an 11-1 win over Staten Island on April 4th before falling 4-3 in game two. The Mavericks were led by senior Samantha Franck who had a team-high four RBI.

·         Freshman Cayla Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Franck was tabbed to the Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Junior Shannon Sisco was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 3rd.

·         Franck was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 27th.

·         Senior Sydney Johnston was named ECC Player of the Week on March 20th.  

·         Crawford was named ECC Player and Rookie of the Week and senior Alexi Benson was tabbed to the Honor Roll on March 13th.

·         Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Sisco was tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 20th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 11-38 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks went 9-15 in ECC play a year ago.

·         The Mavericks are 22-28 in their last 50 meetings against Queens.

·         Mercy is 8-5 in their last 13 meetings against Felician.

·         Sisco is hitting .371 with a team-high 26 runs, nine doubles and 39 hits to go along with five RBI. Senior Hailey Puglia is hitting .272 with 22 hits and three doubles and senior Nicole Smart has 17 hits and 13 RBI. Johnston has a team-high 21 RBI with two home runs, seven doubles and a .270 average and junior Alexandra Karavias has a home run and four RBI.

·         Crawford is hitting a team-best and ECC-best .431 with 12 RBI, two home runs, 31 hits, 21 runs and 11 stolen bases.

·         The pitching staff is led by Benson who is 3-10 with a 4.09 ERA in 87.1 innings with 63 strikeouts. She set a school record for career strikeouts with her 283rd career strikeout at Molloy on March 30th. Senior Angelina Oquendo is 1-7 with a 5.38 ERA in 52 innings and freshman Marina Provencio is 3-2 in the circle with a 6.66 ERA in 27.1 innings.

·         Benson, Sisco and senior Samantha Franck were named Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Mercy is hitting .263 as a team through 30 games and has a 5.39 ERA.

Scouting the Knights

·         Queens is coming off 3-0 and 7-1 losses to St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.

·         The Knights were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 8-28 last season.

·         Queens is led at the plate by Caroline Pescatore who is hitting .327 with four RBI and eight runs scored. Dyana Budakowski is hitting a team-high-tying .329 with 25 hits, 11 runs and three RBI and Ann Grimshaw has a team-high 12 RBI and 28 hits.

·         Amanda Baez has six RBI and five runs and Jenny Murphy has three RBI and six stolen bases.

·         The pitching staff is led by one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Allyson Dilday who is 4-7 in the circle with a 2.79 ERA in 75.1 innings with 54 strikeouts. Budakowski is 1-5 with a 4.57 ERA in 49 innings with 24 strikeouts and Myaisha Kelly is 1-7 with a 3.53 ERA in 39.2 innings.

·         Queens is hitting .244 as a team and has a 3.56 team ERA.

Scouting the Golden Falcons

·         Felician is coming off 6-1 and 6-3 wins over Post on Saturday. The Golden Falcons will face Caldwell on Wednesday, Georgian Court on Thursday and Chestnut Hill on Saturday before hosting the Mavericks on Sunday.

·         The Golden Falcons were picked 10th in the CACC Preseason Poll after going 15-24 last season.

·         Felician is led at the plate by Vienna Chierchia who is hitting a team-best .430 with 25 RBI, three home runs, 52 hits, 31 runs and 16 doubles. Alexis Velotta is hitting .429 with 29 RBI, six home runs, 38 runs and 17 doubles.

·         Daisha Howard is batting .413 with 30 RBI, five home runs and a team-high 42 runs scored and Kathryn Steinmetz has a team-high 35 RBI and is hitting .412 with 21 runs and 10 doubles.

·         Riley Williams leads the pitching staff with a 3.82 ERA in 111.2 innings with a 12-6 record and 70 strikeouts. Alexis De La Cruz is 8-4 with a 4.47 ERA in 76.2 innings with 30 strikeouts.

·         Felician is hitting .337 as a team and has a 4.02 team ERA.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Tuesday, April 18th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 2:30 p.m.
