Scouting the Mavericks
· Mercy is coming off a 7-3 win over D'Youville on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by graduate student Steven Schoen who had a game-high two RBI. The win on Saturday was Head Coach Chris Schoen's 100th career win.
· Freshman Zach Ashline was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.
· Senior Nolan Giblin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 27th.
· Giblin was named ECC Player of the Week on March 13th and junior Ryan Rozinski was tabbed to the Honor Roll.
· Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 6th.
· Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 27th.
· Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.
· Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.
· The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.
· Mercy is 8-2 all-time against Staten Island.
· Leading the returners for the Mavericks are sophomore Jaden Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.
· Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting .281 with 34 hits to go along with 12 RBI and a team-high 21 runs. Caballero recorded his 100th career hit in the win over D'Youville on April 8th. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has a team-high-tying 16 RBI with 19 runs.
· Sanders is hitting .274 on the year with a team-high-tying 16 RBI, two home runs along with 12 runs scored. Giblin is hitting a team-high .313 with 16 RBI and 14 runs scored.
· Senior Justin Glennerster has seven RBI and eight runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has 17 runs, two home runs and 11 RBI and senior Janiel Ramirez has 11 RBI.
· The pitching staff is led by Rozinski who has made seven starts on the mound with a 1-3 record in 30.2 innings with 22 strikeouts. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high 39 innings in nine appearances with a team-high 25 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-2 on the mound with 15 strikeouts in 21.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 38.1 innings in seven starts. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. has made 12 appearances out of the bullpen and has a 5.40 ERA in 11.2 innings with one save. Senior Ryan Dieguez has pitched 11.1 innings out of the bullpen and has a 3.97 ERA. Freshman Diego Wirz pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Bridgeport on March 10th to earn his first collegiate win.
· Mercy is hitting .251 as a team through the first 31 games of the season and is pitching to an 8.13 ERA.
Scouting the Dolphins
· Staten Island is coming off 14-0 and 23-7 wins over Alliance on Saturday.
· The Dolphins were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 11-25 last season.
· Staten Island is led by one-time ECC Player of the Week AJ Vigliotti who is hitting an ECC-best .417 with a team-high 30 hits, 17 runs, 22 RBI and three home runs. Michael Kehoe is hitting .389 with 10 RBI and 14 runs scored and Shendi Ulaj is hitting .351 with 14 RBI and 17 runs scored.
· Vincent Weigele and Nick Cippoletti both have 12 RBI and Tylor Martinez has eight RBI.
· The pitching staff is led by one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Ryan Kehoe who has a team-best 3.77 ERA in 43 innings with a 4-1 record and 62 strikeouts. Two-time ECC Pitcher of the Week John Esposito has a 3.92 ERA in 41.1 innings with a 3-3 record and 51 strikeouts.
· Christian Rice is 2-3 on the mound with a 4.78 ERA in 26.1 innings with 29 strikeouts.
· Staten Island is hitting .267 as a team and has a 6.02 team ERA.
