Game Preview: Baseball Takes on Queens This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 20, 2023) –The Mercy College baseball team will play at ECC foe Queens College on Friday, April 21st at 2 p.m. before hosting the Knights for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22nd at 12 & 3 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday, April 23rd at 12 p.m. at Queens.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 16-8 win over Staten Island on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by graduate student Steven Schoen and freshman Zach Ashline who both had a game-high four RBI.

·         Ashline and sophomore Jaden Caballero were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Ashline was named to the ECC Honor Roll last Monday.

·         Senior Nolan Giblin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 27th.

·         Giblin was named ECC Player of the Week on March 13th and junior Ryan Rozinski was tabbed to the Honor Roll.  

·         Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 6th.

·         Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 27th.

·         Head Coach Chris Schoen recorded his 100th career win in the win over D'Youville on April 8th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.

·         Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.

·         The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.

·         Mercy is 31-43-1 in their last 75 meetings against Queens.

·         Leading the returners for the Mavericks are sophomore Jaden Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was also named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting a team-high .307 with 43 hits to go along with 14 RBI and a team-high 25 runs. Caballero recorded his 100th career hit in the win over D'Youville on April 8th. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has a team-high 19 RBI with 23 runs.

·         Sanders is hitting .281 on the year with 18 RBI, two home runs along with 15 runs scored. Giblin is hitting .302 with 18 RBI and 16 runs scored.

·         Senior Justin Glennerster has nine RBI and 10 runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has 20 runs, three home runs and 17 RBI and senior Janiel Ramirez has 12 RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by Rozinski who has made seven starts on the mound with a 1-3 record in 30.2 innings with 22 strikeouts. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high 47.2 innings in 10 appearances with a team-high 32 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-2 on the mound with 15 strikeouts in 22.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 46.0 innings in eight starts with a team-high two wins. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. has made 13 appearances out of the bullpen and has thrown 11.2 innings with one save. Senior Ryan Dieguez has pitched 14.2 innings out of the bullpen and has a 3.07 ERA. Freshman Diego Wirz pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Bridgeport on March 10th to earn his first collegiate win.

·         Mercy is hitting .262 as a team through the first 35 games of the season and is pitching to a 7.52 ERA.

Scouting the Knights

·         Queens is coming off 8-3 and 8-4 wins over Lincoln on Sunday to extend their winning streak to five games.

·         The Knights were picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 26-17 last season.

·         Queens is currently ranked No. 7 in the NCBWA East Region Poll.

·         The Knights are led at the plate by ECC Preseason Player of the Year and one-time ECC Player of the Week Marc Cisco who is hitting .377 with 21 RBI and a team-high 39 runs scored. One-time ECC Player of the Week Anthony Fontana is hitting a team-high .402 with 39 RBI and a team-high six home runs.

·         Three-time ECC Rookie of the Week Jorsixt Jimenez is hitting .384 with an ECC-best 41 RBI to go along with four home runs and 27 runs. Reed Hoskins is hitting .333 with 26 RBI and five home runs.

·         The pitching staff is led by one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Liam Pulsipher who is 2-2 with a 3.79 ERA in 38 innings with 30 strikeouts. Chris Naronis is 4-2 with a 3.93 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. Danny Gargano has an ECC-best eight saves with a 2-1 record, 1.14 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.

·         Queens is hitting .316 as a team and has a 4.77 team ERA.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Tuesday, April 25th when they play at Pace at 3 p.m.
