Giblin Drives in Game-High-Tying Four Runs as Baseball Plays at Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2023) – Despite a game-high-tying four RBI from senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 10-9 decision to ECC foe Queens College on Friday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium.

The Mavericks (9-27, 5-12 ECC) have dropped two of their last three games, while the Knights (25-9, 9-4 ECC) have won six games in a row.

Giblin went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI and sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) went 1-for-3 with two runs, a home run and an RBI and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) went 1-for-4. Freshman Brian Zbytniewski (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) made the start on the mound and pitched two innings with five runs allowed to earn a no-decision. Senior Ryan Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) allowed two runs in 0.1 innings to take the loss.

Queens was led by Jorsixt Jimenez who went 4-for-5 with four RBI. Dante Interlandi pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win.

The Knights scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Mercy scored two runs in the third inning to make it 5-2. Ashline struck out and reached on an error by the catcher before scoring on a Caballero double down the left field line to make it 5-1. Caballero later scored after senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) reached on an error by the third baseman.

Schoen led off the fourth inning with a home run down the right field line to make it 5-3. The Knights scored two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead.

The score remained 7-3 until the seventh inning when Mercy scored five runs to take an 8-7 lead. Senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) walked and Ashline singled to lead off the inning. Caballero then singled to right field, scoring Ramirez to make it 7-4. After a pitching change, Giblin hit a three-run home run to left field to tie the game at 7-7. Sanders later brought home the go-ahead run on an RBI single to left field that scored Schoen to give Mercy an 8-7 lead.

Mercy added a run in the eighth inning to take a 9-7 lead. Ashline walked to lead off the inning and scored on a Giblin RBI single through the left side. Queens got a run back in the bottom of the eighth on a Jimenez home run to make it 9-8.

The Knights would score two runs in the bottom of the ninth to earn the 10-9 walk-off win. Andrew Ramirez brought home the first run of the inning on a double to tie the game at 9-9. Jayson Rodopoulos drew a bases-loaded walk with one out to bring in the winning run, giving Queens the walk-off win.

Mercy had eight hits and one error and Queens had 12 hits and five errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Queens at 12 p.m.
