Glennerster Records Game-High Three RBI in Game One as Baseball Earns Split With Queens

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2023) – Powered by a game-high three RBI from senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) in game one, the Mercy College baseball team earned an 11-5 win over ECC foe and regionally-ranked Queens College before falling 5-3 in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (10-28, 6-13 ECC) have dropped two of their last three games, while the Knights (26-10, 10-5 ECC) see their six-game winning streak come to an end with the game one loss.

Game 1: Mercy 11, Queens 5

The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Mercy scored four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) led off the inning with a walk before a single from Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) put runners on first and second. Sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) then singled to center field, scoring Ramirez to make it 1-0. Senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) followed with a single that scored Ashline to make it 2-0. Glennerster then singled to third base allowing Caballero to score for the third run of the inning. Giblin scored the final run of the inning following a double play to make it 4-0.

Queens scored a run in the fourth inning on an Andrew Ramirez RBI single to make it 4-1.

The Knights scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead. Glennerster led off the inning with a single and scored on a graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) RBI single to tie the game at 5-5. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) then grounded out to second allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Mercy tacked on two more runs in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Freshman John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) and Caballero led off the inning with singles and both scored on a Glennerster single down the right field line.

The Mavericks scored a run in the seventh inning on a Ramirez sacrifice fly to make it 9-5.

Mercy scored two more runs in the eighth inning to take an 11-5 lead. Caballero singled and stole second before scoring on a Giblin RBI single. Giblin later scored after an error by the catcher to make it 11-5.

Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to give Mercy the game one win.

Caballero went 5-for-5 with three runs and an RBI and Glennerster went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Giblin went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Schoen went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Ashline and Nisco both went 1-for-2 with a run. Graduate student Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) allowed five runs in 4.1 innings to take a no-decision. Freshman Diego Wirz (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) pitched 3.2 shutout innings of relief to earn his second win of the season.

Queens was led by Ramirez who went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Chris Naronis allowed five earned runs to take the loss.

Mercy had 13 hits and no errors and Queens had 14 hits and two errors.

Game 2: Queens 5, Mercy 3

Queens took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Matt Filip two-run triple. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1. Giblin tripled and scored on a Glennerster RBI single to make it 2-1.

The score stayed 2-1 until the fifth inning when Reed Hoskins drove in a run after reaching on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1.

The Knights added a run in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Mercy got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2. Glennerster and freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) led off the inning with singles and Glennerster later scored after Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice.

Queens added an insurance run in the seventh inning to take a 5-2 lead. Ashline doubled in the seventh inning and scored on a Giblin RBI double to make it 5-3. However, a groundout to third ended the game, giving Queens the game two win.

Giblin and Glennerster both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and McAdams and Ashline both went 2-for-3. Schoen and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) both went 1-for-3. Sophomore Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) allowed four runs in six innings to take the loss.

Queens was led by Filip who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Liam Pulsipher allowed two runs in six innings to earn the win and Danny Gargano allowed one run in the seventh to earn the save.

Mercy had 10 hits and no errors and Queens had 12 hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Queens at 12 p.m.
