Game Preview: Baseball Plays at Pace on Tuesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2023) –The Mercy College baseball team will play at Pace University on Tuesday, April 25th at 3 p.m.

Last Meeting Against the Setters

Mercy dropped 3-1 and 13-0 decisions to Pace on March 18, 2023.  

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 10-9 win over Queens on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by freshman Sean McAdams who had five hits and hit the go-ahead home run in the ninth inning.  

·         Freshman Zach Ashline and sophomore Jaden Caballero were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll last Monday.

·         Ashline was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 10th.  

·         Senior Nolan Giblin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 27th.

·         Giblin was named ECC Player of the Week on March 13th and junior Ryan Rozinski was tabbed to the Honor Roll.  

·         Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 6th.

·         Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 27th.

·         Head Coach Chris Schoen recorded his 100th career win in the win over D'Youville on April 8th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.

·         Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.

·         The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.

·         Mercy is 2-10 in their last 12 meetings against Pace and have lost the last four meetings.

·         Leading the returners for the Mavericks are Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was also named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting a team-high .325 with 51 hits to go along with 17 RBI and a team-high 32 runs. And 15 stolen bases. Caballero recorded his 100th career hit in the win over D'Youville on April 8th. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has 24 RBI with 25 runs.

·         Sanders is hitting .271 on the year with 19 RBI, two home runs along with 15 runs scored. Giblin is hitting .318 with a team-high 25 RBI to go along with 22 runs scored.

·         Senior Justin Glennerster has 14 RBI and 13 runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has 22 runs, four home runs and 20 RBI and senior Janiel Ramirez has 13 RBI. Ashline is hitting .439 with 13 RBI and 13 runs scored and McAdams is hitting .296 with seven RBI and 22 runs.

·         The pitching staff is led by Rozinski who has made seven starts on the mound with a 1-3 record in 30.2 innings with 22 strikeouts. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high-tying 52 innings in 11 appearances with a team-high 34 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-2 on the mound with 22 strikeouts in 26.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 52 innings in nine starts with a team-high-tying two wins. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. has made 14 appearances out of the bullpen and has thrown 12.2 innings with one save. Senior Ryan Dieguez has pitched 15 innings out of the bullpen and has a 4.20 ERA. Freshman Diego Wirz pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Bridgeport on March 10th to earn his first collegiate win and tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief against Queens on April 22nd to earn his second win.

·         Mercy is hitting .272 as a team through the first 39 games of the season and is pitching to a 7.52 ERA.

Scouting the Setters

·         Pace is coming off 3-1 and 6-1 losses to Le Moyne on Saturday, extending their losing streak to five games.

·         The Setters were picked fifth in the NE10 Southwest Division Preseason Poll after going 23-20 last season.

·         Pace was ranked fifth in the NCBWA East Region Top 10 poll last week.

·         Pace is led at the plate by Mitchell McCabe who is hitting .347 with 34 runs, 27 RBI and five home runs. Hunter Goldstein is hitting .290 and has 20 RBI.

·         Matthew Rinaldi hits .290 with 23 RBI and a team-high eight doubles and Anthony Labita is hitting a team-high .355 with 22 RBI, four home runs and 23 runs. Luke Jacobi has a team-hgih 28 RBI with 27 runs.

·         The pitching staff is led by Patrick Gleason who has a team-best 2.47 ERA in 51 innings with five wins and 43 strikeouts. Vincent Civitella has a 2.70 ERA in 43.1 innings with a team-high 50 strikeouts and five wins. Brendan McCann is 4-3 with a 1.78 ERA in 25.1 innings.

·         Pace is hitting .291 as a team and has a 4.37 team ERA through 37 games.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Friday, April 28th when they play at Shippensburg at 3 p.m.
