Game Preview: Softball Hosts Staten Island and Queens This Week

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2023) – The Mercy College softball team hosts ECC foes College of Staten Island on Tuesday, April 4th and Queens College on Thursday, April 6th at 2:30 & 4:30 p.m.

Mercy earned a 6-5 win over Staten Island on April 30, 2022.

Mercy dropped a 4-3 decision to Queens on April 21, 2022.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off an 8-7 win in game one over D'Youville on Sunday before falling 10-8 in the nightcap. The Mavericks were led by senior Samantha Franck and freshman Cayla Crawford who each had a game-high two RBI in the game one win.

·         Franck was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll last Monday.

·         Senior Sydney Johnston was named ECC Player of the Week on March 20th.  

·         Freshman Cayla Crawford was named ECC Player and Rookie of the Week and senior Alexi Benson was tabbed to the Honor Roll on March 13th.

·         Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week and junior Shannon Sisco was tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 20th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 11-38 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks went 9-15 in ECC play a year ago.

·         Mercy is 5-3 all-time against Staten Island.

·         The Mavericks are 22-28 in their last 50 meetings against Queens.

·         Sisco is hitting .388 with a team-high 24 runs, nine doubles and 38 hits to go along with five RBI. Senior Hailey Puglia is hitting .280 with 21 hits and three doubles and senior Nicole Smart has 17 hits and 13 RBI. Johnston has a team-high 21 RBI with two home runs, seven doubles and a .294 average and junior Alexandra Karavias has two RBI.

·         Crawford is hitting a team-best and ECC-best .394 with nine RBI, a home run, 26 hits, 18 runs and10 stolen bases.

·         The pitching staff is led by Benson who is 2-10 with a 4.34 ERA in 82.1 innings with 57 strikeouts. She set a school record for career strikeouts with her 283rd career strikeout at Molloy on Thursday. Senior Angelina Oquendo is 1-6 with a 6.07 ERA in 45 innings and freshman Marina Provencio is 3-2 in the circle with a 6.66 ERA in 27.1 innings.

·         Benson, Sisco and senior Samantha Franck were named Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Mercy is hitting .254 as a team through 28 games and has a 5.73 ERA.

Scouting the Dolphins

·         CSI is coming off 6-4 and 11-0 losses to St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday. The Dolphins will play at Chestnut Hill on Monday before playing at Mercy on Tuesday.

·         The Dolphins were picked fifth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 12-26 last season.

·         CSI is led at the plate by Mariah Carcano who is batting a team-high .378 with 31 hits, 13 runs and six RBI. Anissa Acosta has a team-high 21 RBI and three home runs with seven doubles and 12 runs. Elizabeth Moore is second on the team with 10 RBI and Aileen Balderas has eight RBI and two home runs.

·         The pitching staff is led by one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week freshman Alexandra Frenza who is 3-4 in the circle with a 4.60 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 48.2 innings. Alexis Miramontes is 4-8 in the circle with a 5.59 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 51.1 innings.

·         The Dolphins are hitting .263 as a team and have a 6.08 team ERA.

Scouting the Knights

·         Queens is coming off 5-1 and 6-1 losses to Molloy on Sunday.

·         The Knights were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 8-28 last season.

·         Queens is led at the plate by Caroline Pescatore who is hitting a team-high .340 with four RBI and eight runs scored. Dyana Budakowski is hitting .338 with 22 hits, 10 runs and two RBI and Ann Grimshaw has a team-high 11 RBI and 23 hits.

·         Amanda Baez has six RBI and five runs and Jenny Murphy has three RBI and five stolen bases.

·         The pitching staff is led by Allyson Dilday who is 4-5 in the circle with a 2.57 ERA in 65.1 innings with 48 strikeouts. Budakowski is 1-5 with a 4.57 ERA in 49 innings with 24 strikeouts and Myaisha Kelly is 1-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 26.2 innings.

·         Queens is hitting .252 as a team and has a 3.62 team ERA.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Thursday, April 13th when they play at Queens at 2 p.m.
