Giblin Records an RBI as Baseball Hosts STAC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2023) – Despite an RBI from senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Monday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-22, 1-7 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Spartans (12-13, 6-2 ECC) have won three games in a row.

Mercy was led by senior Ryan Gonzalez (Howell, N.J./Neumann University), sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) and freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) who all went 1-for-3. Giblin recorded his 13th RBI of the season. Freshman Brian Zbytniewski (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) pitched five innings with two earned runs allowed to take the loss. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Gregory DiGiaro who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Orrin Winslow pitched eight innings with one run allowed and seven strikeouts to earn the win.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when the Spartans scored two runs on one hit to take a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans added a run in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Mercy scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-1. McAdams singled to lead off the inning and junior Jared Hernandez (Moca, P.R./Friends University) walked to put runners on first and second. A groundout advanced the runners to second and third before Giblin grounded out to first base, scoring McAdams to make it 3-1.

St. Thomas Aquinas scored a run in the top of the eighth on a DiGiaro RBI single to take a 4-1 lead.

C.J. Cumbo drove in the final Spartans run in the top of the ninth to give the Spartans a 5-1 lead. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to give the Spartans the 5-1 win.

Mercy had three hits and one error and STAC had six hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 6th when they play at D'Youville at 5 p.m.
