Schoen and Sanders Homer as Baseball Plays at D'Youville

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2023) – Despite home runs from graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC), the Mercy College baseball team dropped an 11-8 decision to ECC foe D'Youville University on Thursday night at the Medaille Sports Complex.

The Mavericks (5-23, 1-8 ECC) have dropped four games in a row and fall to the Saints (11-13, 4-5 ECC) for the first time in program history.

Schoen went 1-for-3 with two RBI and his second home run of the season and Sanders went 2-for-5 with an RBI and his second home run of the season. Freshman Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) both went 2-for-5. Sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-2 and senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) went 1-for-3. Sophomore Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) allowed six runs in six innings to earn a no-decision. Senior John Gillespie (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) allowed two runs in 0.1 innings to take the loss.

D'Youville was led by Billy Morris who went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Samuel Worthen pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.

Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Caballero led off the game with a single and scored on a Schoen two-run home run to left field to make it 2-0. The Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.

The Mavericks retook the lead in the top of the second, scoring three runs to take a 5-3 lead. Ramirez led off the inning with a single and scored on an Ashline RBI single to make it 3-3. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) brought in the second run of the inning after reaching on a fielder's choice to give Mercy a 4-3 lead. McAdams scored the final run of the inning after senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) reached on an error to make it 5-3.

The score remained 5-3 until the top of the fourth when Mercy plated a run to take a 6-3 lead. McAdams led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Giblin RBI groundout.

The Mavericks increased their lead to 8-3 in the top of the fifth. Glennerster led off with a single and scored on a Sanders two-run home run to left field. D'Youville scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-5.

The Saints added a run in the sixth inning to cut Mercy's lead to 8-6. A Jeremy Glinski two-run home run in the seventh inning tied the game at 8-8.

D'Youville scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth on four hits and one error to take an 11-8 lead. Sanders and Ashline both singled in the top of the ninth, but the Mavericks were unable to score and D'Youville earned the 11-8 win.

Mercy had 12 hits and two errors and D'Youville had 14 hits and two errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at D'Youville for doubleheader at 12 p.m.
