Game Preview: No. 7/8 Men's Lacrosse Hosts No. 12/16 Frostburg State on Friday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2023) – The No. 7/8 Mercy College men's lacrosse team hosts ECC foe No. 12/16 Frostburg State University on Friday, April 7th at 1 p.m.

Mercy earned a 15-10 win over Frostburg State in the ECC Championship Final on May 7, 2022.  

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 16-10 loss to No. 6/7 Mercyhurst on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by senior TJ Heyder and graduate student Jack Gibbons who both had three goals.

·         Last Monday, freshman Devon Duchnowski was named ECC Rookie of the Week and graduate student Tommy Umano was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week. Heyder and junior Andrew Calabria were named to the Honor Roll.

·         On March 21st, junior Jason Kuehner was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week.

·         On March 20th, graduate student Thomas Connors and juniors Brody Caskenette and Kuehner were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll.

·         On March 13th, senior Brady Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week for the third time and senior Justin Gerdvil was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·         On March 6th, Gerdvil and Heyder were both named to the ECC Honor Roll. Gerdvil was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week for the second time on March 7th.

·         On February 27th, Kearnan and Kuehner were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll.

·         Kearnan has a team-high 46 points on 25 goals and a team-high 21 assists with seven caused turnovers and 19 ground balls. He recorded his 100th career ground ball against Le Moyne, recorded his 100th career goal as a Maverick against Georgian Court and recorded his 200th career point as a Maverick against Wilmington. Graduate student Jack Gibbons has 29 goals and eight assists on the season, recording his 100th career goal against Roberts Wesleyan on March 19th. Graduate student Thomas Connors is fourth on the team with 34 points on 18 goals and 16 assists. Junior Greg Gibbons has 12 points on six goals and six assists and Heyder has a team-high 35 goals with five assists. Heyder recorded his 100th career point on Sunday. Senior Robert Guglielmo has six goals and four assists and Calabria has 10 goals and 12 assists. Caskenette has eight goals and four assists and Duchnowski has 11 goals. Sophomore Ian Votta has six goals and two assists.

·         The defense has been led by Gerdvil who has a team-high 24 caused turnovers with a team-high 48 ground balls. Graduate student Jake Fitzgerald is second on the team with 11 caused turnovers and senior Zack Higgins has five caused turnovers. Junior Tyler Pjatak has eight caused turnovers and two goals and graduate student Jack Kipnes has nine caused turnovers and 23 ground balls. Kuehner is 124-186 (.667) on faceoffs with 36 ground balls, two assists and two goals. Graduate student Tommy Umano is 8-2 in goal with 90 saves, a .514 save percentage and 10.57 goals-against average. He recorded his 400th career save at Mercyhurst on April 1st.

·         Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week and Gerdvil was named Defensive Player of the Week on February 20th. Gibbons was tabbed to the Honor Roll for the second straight week on February 20th.

·         Freshman Anthony Barone was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week on February 13th and Kuehner was named to the USILA Team of the Week on February 14th.

·         Mercy is 2-0 all-time against Frostburg State.

·         The Mavericks have won 23 straight games against ECC competition, with their last loss coming in the 2018 ECC Championship Semifinal.

·         The Mavericks are ranked No. 8 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 7 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll. Mercy was ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason for the first time in program history.

·         Mercy was picked to finish first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Kipnes was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

·         The Mavericks made their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season and advanced to the National Championship Game for the first time last season. Mercy also won their third straight ECC Regular Season and Tournament Championships last season.

·         Mercy has had 10 straight winning seasons and have qualified for the ECC Championship in seven straight seasons.

·         The Mavericks are 56-8 in their last 64 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·         Kearnan was named to the Inside Lacrosse Player of the Year Watch List on February 10th and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes and Umano were tabbed USILA Preseason All-Americans on February 1st.

·         Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes, junior Tyler Pjatak and Umano were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans on January 27th.

·         Gibbons was named USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Kipnes, Umano and Pjatak were tabbed to the Preseason All-American Teams.

Scouting the Bobcats

·         Frostburg State is coming off a 30-3 win over D'Youville on Saturday.

·         The Bobcats were picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 11-8 last season.

·         Frostburg State's lone loss came to No. 17 Seton Hill on March 28th by a score of 14-13.

·         The Bobcats earned a 14-12 win over then No. 1 Tampa on March 4th.

·         Frostburg State is ranked No. 12 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 16 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.

·         The Bobcats are led by Jake Bowman who has a team-high 49 points on a team-high 39 goals with 10 assists and 19 ground balls. One-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week Bubba Love has 46 points on 27 goals and 19 assists and one-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week Austin Sipes has 46 points on 23 goals and a team-high 23 assists.

·         Owen McCallum has 14 goals and 21 assists and Tanner Donaldson has 18 goals and 11 assists. Gregg Dort has a team-high 33 ground balls and is 70-127 (.551) on faceoffs.

·         Seamus Kearney has a team-high 19 caused turnovers and Mitch Meckley is 8-1 in goal with 66 saves, a .493 save percentage and 8.36 goals-against average.
