Game Preview: Baseball Hosts Lincoln for Four-Game Series Starting on Thursday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 1, 2023) –The Mercy College baseball team will host ECC foe Lincoln University for a four-game series starting on Thursday, May 4th.

Last Meeting Against the Lions

Mercy earned 7-4 and 13-3 wins over Lincoln on April 16, 2022.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off 7-4 and 5-4 losses to Shippensburg on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by freshman Zach Ashline who hit a home run in game one.

·         Ashline was named ECC Rookie of the Week on Monday.

·         Ashline and senior Nolan Giblin were named to the ECC Honor Roll last Monday.

·         Ashline and sophomore Jaden Caballero were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on April 17th.  

·         Ashline was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 10th.  

·         Giblin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 27th.

·         Giblin was named ECC Player of the Week on March 13th and junior Ryan Rozinski was tabbed to the Honor Roll.  

·         Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 6th.

·         Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 27th.

·         Head Coach Chris Schoen recorded his 100th career win in the win over D'Youville on April 8th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.

·         Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.

·         The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.

·         Leading the returners for the Mavericks are Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was also named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting a team-high .329 with 56 hits to go along with 21 RBI and a team-high 36 runs and 17 stolen bases. Caballero recorded his 100th career hit in the win over D'Youville on April 8th. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has 24 RBI with 26 runs.

·         Sanders is hitting .279 on the year with 20 RBI, two home runs along with 17 runs scored. Giblin is hitting .308 with a team-high 26 RBI to go along with 22 runs scored.

·         Senior Justin Glennerster has 14 RBI and 13 runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has 23 runs, four home runs and 20 RBI and senior Janiel Ramirez has 14 RBI. Ashline is hitting .449 with 17 RBI and 17 runs scored and McAdams is hitting .294 with 12 RBI and 25 runs.

·         The pitching staff is led by Rozinski who has made seven starts on the mound with a 1-3 record in 30.2 innings with 22 strikeouts. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown 55 innings in 12 appearances with a team-high 34 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-2 on the mound with 22 strikeouts in 26.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown a team-high 59 innings in 10 starts with two wins and a save. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. has made 14 appearances out of the bullpen and has thrown 12.2 innings with one save. Senior Ryan Dieguez has pitched 18 innings out of the bullpen and has a 3.50 ERA. Freshman Diego Wirz pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Bridgeport on March 10th to earn his first collegiate win and tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief against Queens on April 22nd to earn his second win. He now has a team-high three wins on the year.

·         Mercy is hitting .273 as a team through 42 games and is pitching to a 7.53 ERA.

Scouting the Lions

·         Lincoln is coming off an 11-4 loss at Molloy on Sunday.

·         The Lions were picked seventh in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 5-35 last season.

·         Lincoln is led by Jaden Greenidge who has a team-high 22 RBI and seven home runs and is hitting .279 on the year. DeAndre Bowens is second on the team with 16 RBI and is hitting .333 and Wesley Hogan has 15 RBI.

·         Alex Jones and Josh Shepherd both have 13 RBI and Jalen Greenidge has 10 RBI and is hitting .281. Miguel Agramonte is hitting a team-high .361 with nine RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by Josiah Bowles who is 3-2 on the mound with a team-best 4.24 ERA in 40.1 innings with 21 strikeouts. Gabriel Sanchez is 1-4 with a 5.32 ERA in 44 innings with 31 strikeouts and David Estevez is 1-7 with a 5.74 ERA in 47 innings with 51 strikeouts.

·         Lincoln is hitting .242 as a team and has a 7.25 team ERA.
