Game Preview: No. 3 Softball Plays at No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas in First Day of ECC Softball Championship on Wednesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May. 1, 2023) – The No. 3 seed Mercy College softball team plays at No. 2 seed St. Thomas Aquinas College in an ECC Softball Championship matchup on Wednesday, May 3rd at 3:30 p.m.

Mercy earned a 3-1 win over STAC before falling 6-2 in game two on April 18, 2023.  

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a sweep of Staten Island on Thursday. The Mavericks were led by senior Nicole Smart who went 4-for-4 with an RBI in game one.

·         Freshman Mackayla Secoda was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Smart was tabbed to the Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Freshman Cayla Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week for the third straight week last Monday and junior Shannon Sisco was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·         Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week and senior Samantha Franck was tabbed to the Honor Roll on April 17th.

·         Junior Shannon Sisco was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 3rd.

·         Franck was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 27th.

·         Senior Sydney Johnston was named ECC Player of the Week on March 20th.  

·         Crawford was named ECC Player and Rookie of the Week and Benson was tabbed to the Honor Roll on March 13th.

·         Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Sisco was tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 20th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 11-38 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks went 9-15 in ECC play a year ago.

·         The Mavericks are 34-21 in their last 55 meetings against the Spartans.

·         Mercy is making their third straight ECC Tournament appearance.

·         The Mavericks won their lone ECC Tournament Championship in 2017.

·         Mercy last won an ECC Tournament game in 2021.

·         Sisco is hitting .383 with a team-high 38 runs, 12 doubles and 59 hits to go along with eight RBI. She recorded her 100th career hit on April 22nd against Molloy. Senior Hailey Puglia is hitting .237 with 28 hits and three doubles and senior Nicole Smart has 30 hits and 18 RBI. Johnston has a team-high 31 RBI with two home runs, 11 doubles and a .291 average and junior Alexandra Karavias has a home run and five RBI.

·         Crawford is hitting a team-best and ECC-best .456 with 20 RBI, five home runs, 52 hits, 31 runs and 15 stolen bases. Franck is hitting .287 with 27 RBI and a team-high six home runs. She recorded her 100th career hit against D'Youville on April 23rd. Seppala is hitting .322 with 15 RBI and 28 runs scored.

·         The pitching staff is led by Benson who is 6-11 with a 3.65 ERA in 119 innings with 89 strikeouts. She set a school record for career strikeouts with her 283rd career strikeout at Molloy on March 30th and recorded her 300th career strikeout at Queens on April 13th. Senior Angelina Oquendo is 1-11 with a 5.80 ERA in 70 innings and freshman Marina Provencio is 6-2 in the circle with a 5.22 ERA in 52.1 innings.

·         Benson, Sisco and senior Samantha Franck were named Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Mercy is hitting .270 as a team through 44 games and has a 4.88 ERA.

Scouting the Spartans

·         The Spartans are coming off 3-1 and 4-3 wins over Queens on Monday.

·         The Spartans were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 28-21 last season.

·         STAC is making their fourth straight ECC Tournament appearance.

·         The Spartans have never won the ECC Tournament Championship.

·         STAC finished runner-up in the ECC Tournament Championship in 2021.

·         The Spartans are led at the plate by Elyse Marcano who is hitting .310 with 24 runs, 13 RBI and 14 stolen bases. Eliana Raposo has a team-high 22 RBI and is hitting .284 with a team-high 30 runs. Adriana Coira has 20 RBI and a team-high four triples and Emilie Olivier has 20 RBI and four home runs.

·         ECC Preseason Pitcher of the Year and one-time ECC Player of the Week Abbie Landrum is hitting a team-best .320 with 16 RBI and 13 runs scored. Landrum is also 10-9 in the circle with a 1.97 ERA in 135 innings with 102 strikeouts. Three-time ECC Pitcher of the Week and ECC Preseason Player of the Year Carissa Della Vecchia is 16-3 with a 1.37 ERA in 133 innings with 199 strikeouts.

·         The Spartans are hitting .255 as a team and have a 1.88 team ERA.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Friday, May 5th at Molloy in the ECC Championship.
