Game Preview: No. 3 Seed Softball Continues Play in ECC Championship on Friday and Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May. 4, 2023) – The No. 3 seed Mercy College softball team plays at No. 1 seed Molloy University in an elimination game of the ECC Softball Championship on Friday, May 5th at 2 p.m. If the Mavericks win they would play the loser of Queens/St. Thomas Aquinas at 4:30 p.m. at Molloy. If Mercy wins both games they would play in the Final on Saturday, May 6th at 12 p.m. at Molloy.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 7-2 loss to No. 2 seed STAC on the first day of the ECC Championship on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Alexandra Karavias who had a team-high two RBI.

·         Freshman Mackayla Secoda was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Smart was tabbed to the Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Freshman Cayla Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week for the third straight week last Monday and junior Shannon Sisco was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·         Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week and senior Samantha Franck was tabbed to the Honor Roll on April 17th.

·         Junior Shannon Sisco was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 3rd.

·         Franck was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 27th.

·         Senior Sydney Johnston was named ECC Player of the Week on March 20th.  

·         Crawford was named ECC Player and Rookie of the Week and Benson was tabbed to the Honor Roll on March 13th.

·         Crawford was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Sisco was tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 20th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 11-38 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks went 9-15 in ECC play a year ago.

·         The Mavericks are 17-41 in their last 58 meetings against Molloy.

·         Molloy won the season series against Mercy 3-1 this season.

·         Mercy is making their third straight ECC Tournament appearance.

·         The Mavericks won their lone ECC Tournament Championship in 2017.

·         Mercy last won an ECC Tournament game in 2021.

·         Sisco is hitting .376 with a team-high 38 runs, 12 doubles and 59 hits to go along with eight RBI. She recorded her 100th career hit on April 22nd against Molloy. Senior Hailey Puglia is hitting .231 with 28 hits and three doubles and senior Nicole Smart has 32 hits and 18 RBI. Johnston has a team-high 31 RBI with two home runs, 11 doubles and a .292 average and junior Alexandra Karavias has a home run and seven RBI.

·         Crawford is hitting a team-best and ECC-best .444 with 20 RBI, five home runs, 52 hits, 31 runs and 15 stolen bases. Franck is hitting .291 with 27 RBI and a team-high six home runs. She recorded her 100th career hit against D'Youville on April 23rd. Seppala is hitting .315 with 15 RBI and 28 runs scored.

·         The pitching staff is led by Benson who is 6-12 with a 3.84 ERA in 124 innings with 90 strikeouts. She set a school record for career strikeouts with her 283rd career strikeout at Molloy on March 30th and recorded her 300th career strikeout at Queens on April 13th. Senior Angelina Oquendo is 1-11 with a 5.82 ERA in 71 innings and freshman Marina Provencio is 6-2 in the circle with a 5.22 ERA in 52.1 innings.

·         Benson, Sisco and senior Samantha Franck were named Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Mercy is hitting .269 as a team through 45 games and has a 4.95 ERA.

Scouting the Lions

·         Molloy is coming off a 9-0 loss to No. 4 seed Queens on the opening day of the ECC Championship on Wednesday.

·         The Lions were picked tied for second in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 24-33 last season, advancing to the final of the ECC Championship.

·         Molloy claimed a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship for the first time since 2017.

·         The Lions were runner-up in last year's tournament and are making their 13th ECC Championship appearance in the last 14 seasons.

·         Molloy is searching for their sixth ECC title and first since 2016.

·         Molloy is led at the plate by one-time ECC Player of the Week Karsyn Eaton who is batting .294 with 18 runs, 10 doubles and 18 RBI. Alex Burns has a team-high 33 RBI with eight home runs, 20 runs and 11 stolen bases. Chrissie Huhn has 19 RBI and has 25 runs scored.

·         Cheralyn Dusharme has 18 RBI and one-time ECC Rookie of the Week Mae Savage has nine RBI. Two-time ECC Player of the Week Steph Conrade has 22 RBI, a team-high 29 stolen bases to go along with a team-high 37 runs.

·         One-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Amanda King is hitting .304 at the plate with 21 RBI and 29 runs scored. She is also 12-10 in the circle with a 3.30 ERA in 131.2 innings with 65 strikeouts. Two-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Brianna Macias is 12-6 in the circle with a 2.40 ERA in 137 innings with 68 strikeouts.

·         Molloy is hitting .289 as a team and has a 2.88 team ERA.

Scouting the Spartans

·         The Spartans are coming off a 7-2 win over No. 3 Mercy in the opening day of the ECC Championship on Wednesday.

·         The Spartans were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 28-21 last season.

·         STAC is making their fourth straight ECC Tournament appearance.

·         The Spartans have never won the ECC Tournament Championship.

·         STAC finished runner-up in the ECC Tournament Championship in 2021.

·         The Spartans are led at the plate by Elyse Marcano who is hitting .313 with 25 runs, 14 RBI and 14 stolen bases. Eliana Raposo has a team-high 25 RBI and is hitting .285 with a team-high 31 runs and five home runs. Adriana Coira has 21 RBI and a team-high four triples and Emilie Olivier has 20 RBI and four home runs.

·         ECC Preseason Pitcher of the Year and one-time ECC Player of the Week Abbie Landrum is hitting a team-best .333 with 17 RBI and 14 runs scored. Landrum is also 10-9 in the circle with a 1.97 ERA in 135 innings with 102 strikeouts. Three-time ECC Pitcher of the Week and ECC Preseason Player of the Year Carissa Della Vecchia is 17-3 with a 1.40 ERA in 140 innings with 209 strikeouts.

·         The Spartans are hitting .257 as a team and have a 1.88 team ERA.

Scouting the Knights

·         Queens is coming off a 9-0 win over Molloy on Wednesday in the opening day of the ECC Championship. The Knights will face STAC on Friday at 10 a.m. in a winner's bracket game at Molloy.

·         The Knights were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 8-28 last season.

·         Queens is making their first ECC Championship appearance since 2015.

·         The Knights have won three ECC Championships with the last coming in 2015.

·         Queens is led at the plate by Caroline Pescatore who is hitting .318 with seven RBI and 10 runs scored. Dyana Budakowski is hitting .270 with 33 hits, 16 runs and nine RBI and Ann Grimshaw has a team-high 16 RBI and 41 hits.

·         Amanda Baez has nine RBI and 10 runs and Jenny Murphy has seven RBI and eight stolen bases.

·         The pitching staff is led by one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Allyson Dilday who is 8-12 in the circle with a 2.18 ERA in 138 innings with 110 strikeouts. Budakowski is 2-9 with a 4.31 ERA in 76.1 innings with 36 strikeouts and Myaisha Kelly is 1-8 with a 4.57 ERA in 49 innings.

·         Queens is hitting .242 as a team and has a 3.28 team ERA.
