ECC Baseball Championship Preview

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 9, 2023) –The Mercy College baseball team opens play in the ECC Baseball Championship on Thursday, May 11th at 12 p.m. at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.

2023 ECC Baseball Championship hosted by Molloy College at Mitchel Field - Uniondale, N.Y.

Thursday, May 11

12:00 PM - No. 4 Mercy (15-31, 10-14 ECC) vs. No. 1 Molloy (33-15, 19-5 ECC)

3:00 PM - No. 3 Queens (29-16, 13-9 ECC) vs. No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas (23-25, 16-8 ECC)

Friday, May 12

10:00 a.m. - Loser Game One vs. Loser Game Two

1:00 p.m. - Winner Game One vs. Winner Game Two

4:00 p.m. - Winner Game Three vs. Loser Game Four

Saturday, May 13

12:00 p.m. - Winner Game Four vs. Winner Game Five

If necessary - 30 minutes after the completion of Game Six

Tickets

$20 – All-Tournament pass for all tournament games.

$8 – Single day tickets for adults.

$5 – Single day tickets for Children/Seniors/Students

Tickets must be purchased for each day. Tickets must be purchased at www.eccsports.org/tickets. Cash will not be accepted so walkup tickets at the venue must be purchased through the ECC website (QR code will be available at the gate).

Last Meeting Against the Lions

Mercy earned 7-4 and 13-3 wins over Lincoln on April 16, 2022.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 10-3 loss to Lincoln on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by sophomores Joseph Gonzalez and Connor Ruland both had an RBI.

·         Senior Nolan Giblin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Ashline was named ECC Rookie of the Week last week.

·         Ashline and senior Nolan Giblin were named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 24th.  

·         Ashline and sophomore Jaden Caballero were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on April 17th.  

·         Ashline was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 10th.  

·         Giblin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 27th.

·         Giblin was named ECC Player of the Week on March 13th and junior Ryan Rozinski was tabbed to the Honor Roll.  

·         Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 6th.

·         Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 27th.

·         Mercy has qualified for the ECC Championship in each of the last three seasons and will be playing in their second straight ECC Championship.

·         The Mavericks look to win their first ECC Championship and qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

·         Mercy is looking to win their first game in the ECC Championship since 2010.

·         Head Coach Chris Schoen recorded his 100th career win in the win over D'Youville on April 8th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.

·         Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.

·         The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.

·         Leading the returners for the Mavericks are Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was also named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting a team-high .330 with 61 hits to go along with 22 RBI and a team-high 41 runs and 22 stolen bases. Caballero recorded his 100th career hit in the win over D'Youville on April 8th. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has 27 RBI with 30 runs.

·         Sanders is hitting .268 on the year with 20 RBI, two home runs along with 18 runs scored. Giblin is hitting .328 with a team-high-tying 27 RBI to go along with 28 runs scored. He recorded his 100th career run against Lincoln on Thursday.

·         Senior Justin Glennerster has 20 RBI and 15 runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has 26 runs, four home runs and 20 RBI and senior Janiel Ramirez has 14 RBI. Ashline is hitting .418 with 21 RBI and 18 runs scored and McAdams is hitting .301 with 16 RBI and 26 runs.

·         The pitching staff is led by Rozinski who has made seven starts on the mound with a 1-3 record in 31.2 innings with 22 strikeouts. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown 62 innings in 13 appearances with a team-high 38 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-2 on the mound with 23 strikeouts in 28.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown a team-high 68 innings in 11 starts with three wins and a save. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. has made 15 appearances out of the bullpen and has thrown 13.2 innings with one save. Senior Ryan Dieguez has pitched 21 innings out of the bullpen and has a 3.00 ERA. Freshman Diego Wirz pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Bridgeport on March 10th to earn his first collegiate win and tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief against Queens on April 22nd to earn his second win. He now has a team-high-tying three wins on the year.

·         Mercy is hitting .277 as a team through 46 games and is pitching to a 7.12 ERA.

Scouting the Lions

·         Molloy is coming off a 13-3 loss to nationally-ranked Southern N.H. on Saturday.

·         The Lions were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 40-15 last season, winning their most games in program history.

·         Molloy earned the top seed in the tournament for the second straight year and have won the last two ECC Championships.

·         The Lions look to win their fourth ECC Championship.

·         Molloy repeated as ECC Champions last season and fell one game short of advancing to the NCAA Division II World Series for the second year in a row.

·         The Lions are ranked third in the NCBWA East Region Top 10 poll and were ranked 8th in the NCAA East Regional Rankings last week.

·         Molloy is led at the plate by three-time ECC Rookie of the Week JJ DeVito who is hitting .375 with 12 stolen bases and 47 runs to go along with 10 doubles, four home runs and 31 RBI. One-time ECC Player of the Week Garrett Scavelli is hitting a team-high .383 with a team-high 41 RBI and a team-high 18 doubles and 54 runs.

·         Jake McCarthy has 39 RBI and Aidan Larkin is hitting .326 with 34 RBI and 12 doubles.

·         The pitching staff is led by ECC Preseason Pitcher of the Year and two-time ECC Pitcher of the Week this season Charlie Cucchiara who is 7-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 78.2 innings with 61 strikeouts. One-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Brian Morrisey has a team-best 2.89 ERA in 74.2 innings with a 6-3 record and 45 strikeouts. One-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Mike Andreoli has a 4.61 ERA in 54.2 innings with 48 strikeouts and an 8-0 record.

·         Molloy has a .313 team batting average and a 4.64 team ERA through 48 games.

Scouting the Spartans

·         St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off a 5-0 loss to Queens on Saturday.

·         The Spartans were picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 23-23 last season overall and 14-7 in ECC play.

·         St. Thomas Aquinas is making their 14th appearance in the ECC Championship in the last 15 seasons.

·         The Spartans have won four ECC titles and are looking for their first since 2018.

·         STAC is led at the plate by Sean Lynch who is batting .287 with 16 RBI, five stolen bases and 13 runs scored. Andrew Guerra is hitting .296 with 31 RBI, three home runs and 22 runs and Nick O'Connor is hitting a team-high .324 with 24 RBI, 13 stolen bases and 39 runs scored.

·         One-time ECC Player of the Week Gregory DiGiaro has a team-high 51 RBI and 11 home runs with a team-high 40 runs and C.J. Cumbo has 27 RBI and five home runs. Andrew Jemison is hitting .310 with 20 RBI, 16 doubles, 13 stolen bases and 39 runs and Kyle Lagrutta has 28 RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by three-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Aaron Dona who has a team-best 3.57 ERA in 70.2 innings with a 6-3 record and 104 strikeouts. John Archer is 3-5 on the mound with a 5.49 ERA in 62.1 innings with 33 strikeouts and Andrew Alameda is 4-3 with a 4.83 ERA in 54 innings with 35 strikeouts. Mateo Reyes has pitched 22.1 innings out of the bullpen and is 3-1 with three saves, a 3.63 ERA and 22 strikeouts.

·         The Spartans are hitting .276 as a team and have a 5.50 team ERA.

Scouting the Knights

·         Queens is coming off a 5-0 win over STAC on Saturday.

·         The Knights were picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 26-17 last season.

·         Queens is making their fourth straight appearance in the ECC Championship.

·         The Knights currently are on a 25-year drought without a conference championship, with their last coming during the 1998 season. Queens fell to Molloy in the final last season.

·         Queens is currently ranked No. 10 in the NCBWA East Region Poll.

·         The Knights are led at the plate by ECC Preseason Player of the Year and one-time ECC Player of the Week Marc Cisco who is hitting .356 with 24 RBI and a team-high 47 runs scored. One-time ECC Player of the Week Anthony Fontana is hitting .376 with 40 RBI and a team-high-tying six home runs.

·         Four-time ECC Rookie of the Week Jorsixt Jimenez is hitting a team-high .382 with a team-high 49 RBI to go along with six home runs and 38 runs. Reed Hoskins is hitting .319 with 31 RBI and five home runs.

·         The pitching staff is led by one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Liam Pulsipher who is 4-2 with a 3.70 ERA in 56 innings with 42 strikeouts. Chris Naronis is 4-4 with a 4.98 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 47 innings. Danny Gargano has an ECC-best nine saves with a 2-2 record, 2.36 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 26.2 innings. Jordan Sanabria and Dean Fazah both have a team-high five wins.

·         Queens is hitting .315 as a team and has a 5.21 team ERA.
