Game Preview: No. 3 Seed Men's Lacrosse Hosts No. 6 Seed Saint Anselm in NCAA Tournament First Round Matchup on Wednesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 9, 2023) – The No. 3 seeded Mercy College men's lacrosse team hosts No. 6 seeded Saint Anselm College in an NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship First Round matchup on Wednesday, May 10th at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 15-9 win over Frostburg State on Saturday for their fourth straight ECC Championship. The Mavericks were led by senior PJ Argiros who went 18-for-26 on faceoffs and had 10 ground balls. He was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player.

·         Senior Brady Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Year, senior Justin Gerdvil was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year, graduate student Tommy Umano was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Year and head coach Ryan MacSpadyen was tabbed Coach of the Year.

·         Kearnan, Gerdvil, Umano, Jack Gibbon, Jack Kipnes, Tyler Pjatak and Jason Kuehner were named First Team All-ECC. TJ Heyder, Andrew Calabria, Damiano Ferrara and Jake Fitzgerald were named Second Team All-ECC.  

·         Junior Jason Kuehner was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week last Tuesday.

·         Senior Justin Gerdvil was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Kearnan and TJ Heyder were tabbed to the Honor Roll last Monday.

·         Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, Gerdvil was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week and Heyder was named to the Honor Roll on April 24th.

·         Graduate student Thomas Connors and Kearnan were named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 17th.   

·         On April 11th, graduate student Tommy Umano was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week.

·         Umano was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on April 10th and Kearnan was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·         On March 27th, freshman Devon Duchnowski was named ECC Rookie of the Week and graduate student Tommy Umano was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week. Heyder and junior Andrew Calabria were named to the Honor Roll.

·         On March 21st, junior Jason Kuehner was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week.

·         On March 20th, graduate student Thomas Connors and juniors Brody Caskenette and Kuehner were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll.

·         On March 13th, Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week for the third time and senior Justin Gerdvil was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·         On March 6th, Gerdvil and Heyder were both named to the ECC Honor Roll. Gerdvil was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week for the second time on March 7th.

·         On February 27th, Kearnan and Kuehner were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll.

·         Kearnan has a team-high 85 points on 49 goals and a team-high 36 assists with nine caused turnovers and 28 ground balls. He recorded his 100th career ground ball against Le Moyne, recorded his 100th career goal as a Maverick against Georgian Court, recorded his 200th career point as a Maverick against Wilmington and recorded his 300th career point against Molloy on April 27th. Kearnan also recorded his 100th career assist as a Maverick against Adelphi on April 19th. Graduate student Jack Gibbons has 41 goals and 18 assists on the season, recording his 100th career goal against Roberts Wesleyan on March 19th and his 200th career point against Molloy on May 3rd. Graduate student Thomas Connors is third on the team with 59 points on 32 goals and 27 assists. Junior Greg Gibbons has 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists and Heyder has a team-high 58 goals with 10 assists. Heyder recorded his 100th career point on March 19th and his 100th career goal against Molloy on April 27th. Heyder has also set a single-season school record with his 58 goals so far this season. Senior Robert Guglielmo has seven goals and seven assists and Calabria has 17 goals and 26 assists. Caskenette has 12 goals and five assists and Duchnowski has 19 goals and two assists. Sophomore Ian Votta has six goals and two assists.

·         The defense has been led by Gerdvil who has a team-high 38 caused turnovers with a team-high 75 ground balls. Graduate student Jake Fitzgerald is second on the team with 18 caused turnovers and graduate student Zack Higgins has nine caused turnovers. Junior Tyler Pjatak has 11 caused turnovers and two goals and graduate student Jack Kipnes has 12 caused turnovers and 42 ground balls. Kuehner is 183-277 (.661) on faceoffs with 64 ground balls, two assists and seven goals. He recorded his 100th career ground ball at STAC on April 23rd. Umano is 14-3 in goal with 172 saves, a .564 save percentage and 9.58 goals-against average. He recorded his 400th career save at Mercyhurst on April 1st.

·         Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week and Gerdvil was named Defensive Player of the Week on February 20th. Gibbons was tabbed to the Honor Roll for the second straight week on February 20th.

·         Freshman Anthony Barone was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week on February 13th and Kuehner was named to the USILA Team of the Week on February 14th.

·         Mercy is 5-0 all-time against Saint Anselm.

·         The Mavericks won their fourth straight ECC Tournament and Regular Season Championships this season.

·         Mercy is making their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Mavericks are hosting a First Round game for the second time. Mercy last hosted a First Round game in 2019.

·         Mercy is 3-0 all-time in home NCAA Tournament games.

·         The Mavericks look to advance to the Quarterfinals for the fourth straight season.

·         The Mavericks are ranked No. 8 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 4 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll. Mercy was ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason for the first time in program history.

·         Mercy was picked to finish first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Kipnes was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

·         The Mavericks made their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season and advanced to the National Championship Game for the first time last season.

·         Mercy has had 11 straight winning seasons.

·         The Mavericks are 62-9 in their last 71 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·         Kearnan was named to the Inside Lacrosse Player of the Year Watch List on February 10th and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes and Umano were tabbed USILA Preseason All-Americans on February 1st.

·         Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes, junior Tyler Pjatak and Umano were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans on January 27th.

·         Gibbons was named USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Kipnes, Umano and Pjatak were tabbed to the Preseason All-American Teams.

Scouting the Hawks

·         Saint Anselm is coming off an 8-4 loss to Le Moyne in the NE10 Semifinals on May 3rd.

·         The Hawks are making their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

·         Saint Anselm was picked third in the NE10 Preseason Poll after going 10-6 last season, losing in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

·         The Hawks had nine student-athletes named to the NE10 All-Conference Teams including Ryan Slattery who became the first two-time Defensive Player of the Year in program history.

·         Saint Anselm looks to win their first NCAA Tournament game since 2021.

·         The Hawks are led by Third Team All-NE10 selection Jack Andrews who has a team-high 35 points on 31 goals and four assists and by First Team All-NE10 selection Noah Larsen who has 19 goals and a team-high 15 assists.

·         Jack Robinson has 20 goals and 12 assists and Chase Lilly has 16 goals, eight assists and 32 ground balls. Craig Yannone has a team-high 66 ground balls and is 106-187 (.567) on faceoffs. NE10 All-Rookie Team selection Quinn Gannon is 74-134 (.552) on faceoffs with 39 ground balls.

·         Henry Alford, Ethan Dolan, Jonathan Holland and Slattery all have a team-high-tying 15 caused turnovers. David Olsen is 8-3 in goal with 94 saves, a .505 save percentage and 8.85 goals-against average. Anthony Kubik is 1-1 with 11 saves, a.478 save percentage and 6.56 goals-against average in four games.
