DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2023) – Despite a combined 16 saves from junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and sophomore Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 6-0 decision to NE10 foe Assumption University on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-3, 2-1 NE10) suffer their first NE10 loss of the season, while the Greyhounds (4-4, 3-0 NE10) remain unbeaten in NE10 play and improve to 8-0 all-time against Mercy.
Giordano made a game-high nine saves in the first half to take the loss. McClure stopped seven shots in the second half and senior Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore Reagan Lane (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) both had a defensive save.
Assumption was led by Mia Salah who had a game-high two goals. Paige Gillette made three saves to earn the shutout win.
Giordano made four saves in the first 10 minutes of the game to keep the game scoreless. Elle Murray gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, after a Caroline McSweeney assist. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Giordano stopped four more shots and Devlin made a defensive save in the second quarter before Lily Daly scored for Assumption to give the visitors a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Giordano made another save in the 25th minute before Salah netted her first goal of the game in the 27th minute to give Assumption a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Salah netted her second goal of the game in the 37th minute to give Assumption a 4-0 lead. McClure made three more saves until Julia Carbone found the back of the cage to give the Greyhounds a 5-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Marta Brzoska recorded the final Assumption goal in the 47th minute to give the Greyhounds a commanding 6-0 lead. Senior Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) and junior Jessica Evans (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) both had strong scoring chances in the fourth quarter, but Gillette came up with a pair of saves to keep Mercy off the scoreboard.
Lane prevented the Greyhounds from scoring again with less than a minute left with her defensive save. Assumption would come away with a 6-0 win.
Assumption held a 35-5 edge in shots and a 24-3 edge in shots on goal. Assumption also held an 11-2 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, September 26th when they play at Adelphi at 4 p.m.
