Tarin and Rosa Score as Women's Soccer Earns 2-1 Win Over Staten Island

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2023) – Powered by goals from sophomore Maleah Tarin (Eastvale, Calif./Chino Hills) and senior Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over ECC foe College of Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-2-2, 2-0-1 ECC) have won two games in a row and are unbeaten in their last three games. Mercy improves to 3-0 all-time against the Dolphins (2-2-3, 0-2 ECC).

Mercy was led by Tarin who recorded her team-leading third goal of the season and by Rosa who netted her second goal of the season. Senior Jennifer Silva (Jurupa Valley, Calif./Jurupa Valley) dished out her first assist of the season and graduate student Tyra Anderson (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) recorded her first collegiate assist. Sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made one save to earn the win in goal.

Staten Island was led by Jacquelyn D'Amico who scored and by Sara Villacres who made a game-high nine saves to take the loss.

Villacres made three saves in the first 20 minutes of action and a Rosa shot hit the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Villacres made three more saves in the half to keep Mercy from scoring and the teams headed into halftime tied at 0-0.

Villacres stopped two more shots in the opening minutes of the second half and Anaya made her lone save in the 59th minute. Rosa finally broke the scoreless tie in the 61st minute when Anderson fed her a ball in the box and Rosa fired a ball into the upper left corner of the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.

Staten Island would even the score at 1-1 in the 69th minute after D'Amico scored following an Emily Albano free kick from just inside midfield.

The Mavericks took the lead for good in the 72nd minute when Silva served a perfect free kick into the box that was headed into the back of the net by Tarin to give Mercy a 2-1 lead.

The Mercy backline would not surrender another Staten Island shot and the Mavericks earned the 2-1 ECC win.

Mercy held a 23-2 edge in shots and an 11-2 edge in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 30th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
