Fitzgerald Scores and Giordano Makes Career-High 14 Saves as Field Hockey Opens 2023 Season Against Bloomsburg

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2023) – Despite a goal from senior Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and a career-high 14 saves from junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), the Mercy University field hockey team opened its 2023 season with a 4-1 loss to Bloomsburg University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (0-1) open their season with a loss, while the Huskies (3-0) have won three straight games to open the season.

Fitzgerald scored her fourth career goal and junior Jessica Evans (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) dished out her first collegiate assist. Giordano made a career-high 14 saves in 50:16 minutes of action to take the loss. Senior Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) added a game-high two defensive saves.

Bloomsburg was led by Emily Swineford who had two goals and an assist. Genna Bush had two goals and Jackie Nevel made four saves to earn the win.

Giordano made six saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless at the end of the first quarter.

Devlin made a defensive save in the 27th minute to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard. Mercy broke through with the game's first goal at the end of the second quarter when Fitzgerald found the back of the cage after a pass from Evans following a Fitzgerald penalty corner to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Bloomsburg evened the score at 1-1 in the 33rd minute when Bush scored off an assist from Sam Schaffer. Giordano stopped three more shots before Swineford scored in the 36th minute to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. The score remained 2-1 at the end of three quarters.

Bush made it 3-1 in the 48th minute following an assist from Swineford and Swineford increased the Huskies lead to 4-1 in the 51st minute following an assist from Jasmine Fink. Bloomsburg led the rest of the way and earned the 4-1 win.

Bloomsburg held a 24-9 edge in shots and a 20-5 edge in shots on goal. The Huskies also held a 14-7 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 6th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 6 p.m.
