Sabert, Preston and Rosenfeld Score as Field Hockey Hosts New Haven

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2024) – Despite goals from freshman Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland), sophomore Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and graduate student Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 overtime decision to NE10 foe University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-7, 2-6 NE10) have dropped six games in a row and fall to the Chargers (5-8, 4-4 NE10) for the first time since 2021.

Mercy was led by Sabert who recorded her team-leading fifth goal of the season and dished out her third assist of the year. Preston netted her fourth goal of the year and Rosenfeld added her third goal of the season. Graduate student Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) dished out her second assist of the season and junior Reagan Lane (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) recorded her third defensive save of the year. Junior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University) made four saves to take the loss.

New Haven was led by Abby Nixon who scored two goals. Cara Lambert made nine saves to earn the win.

The game remained scoreless until the 10th minute when Eliza Craven scored following a Kat Trammel penalty corner to give New Haven a 1-0 lead. The Chargers headed into the second quarter with a 1-0 lead.

Lambert made three saves and McClure added one save in the second quarter as New Haven went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Sabert tied the game at 1-1 in the 39th minute following a long shot that found its way into the back of the cage. The Chargers regained the lead in the final minute of play of the third quarter when Erin Smith deflected in a Sophia Ruh shot attempt, giving New Haven a 2-1 lead after three quarters.

The Mavericks tied the game at 2-2 in the 49th minute when Volz fired a ball in front that was deflected in by Preston, following a junior Samantha Trickel (Ottsville, Pa./Palisades) penalty corner. Rosenfeld gave Mercy their first lead of the game a minute later when she fired home a long cross from Sabert into the lower left corner of the cage to give Mercy a 3-2 lead. New Haven tied the score at 3-3 in the 55th minute when Nixon fired a long shot from just inside the circle into the cage. The score remained tied at 3-3 after regulation and the teams headed to overtime.

Both McClure and Lambert made saves early in the overtime period to keep the game tied at 3-3. New Haven scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute when Nixon deflected in a Kelli Jacobson shot attempt, after a Sophia Ruh penalty corner, giving the Chargers the 4-3 overtime win.

Mercy held a 15-14 edge in shots and a 12-9 edge in shots on goal. New Haven held a 17-10 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday when they host AIC at 11 a.m. for Senior Day.
