DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2024) – Powered by goals from graduate student Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and senior Jessica Evans (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) and a game-high 11 saves from senior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), the Mercy University field hockey team earned a 2-0 Senior Day win over NE10 foe American International College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, the Mavericks honored Volz, Evans, Giordano, senior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and graduate student Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (6-7, 3-6 NE10) snap a six-game losing streak and defeat the Yellow Jackets (6-7, 4-5 NE10) for the fourth straight time.
Mercy was led by Volz who recorded her second goal of the season and by Evans who netted her first goal of the year. Junior Reagan Lane (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and freshman Eunice Santiago (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) each had a defensive save. Giordano made a season-high 11 saves to earn the shutout win.
AIC was led by Frederique den Hartog who made eight saves to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the 8th minute of play when Volz connected on a penalty stroke goal to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks headed into the second quarter with a 1-0 lead.
Giordano made two saves in the second quarter and den Hartog also stopped two shots to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
Evans made it 2-0 in the 31st minute following a penalty stroke goal. Giordano stopped six more shots in the quarter to keep Mercy ahead 2-0 after three quarters.
Giordano recorded three more saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout, giving the Mavericks the 2-0 Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 17-16 edge in shots and shots on goal were tied at 13-13. AIC held an 8-7 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 23rd when they play at STAC at 3 p.m.
