SPARKILL, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2024) – Despite a goal from freshman Jaime Stella (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) and a game-high five saves from senior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision at NE10 foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (6-8, 3-7 NE10) have dropped seven of their last eight games, while the Spartans (4-11, 3-7 NE10) have won two games in a row.
Mercy was led by Stella who recorded her first collegiate goal. Giordano made a game-high five saves in the second half with one goal allowed. Junior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University) made one save in the first half with one goal allowed to take the loss.
STAC was led by Nicola Van Vuuren who scored two goals. Madeline Schaefer made four saves to earn the win.
The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the 7th minute when Van Vuuren scored following an assist from Hailey Galison. Both McClure and Schaefer made a save to keep the score 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime with STAC recording both shots in the quarter.
Giordano made three saves to open the second half to keep the score 1-0. Van Vuuren gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute and STAC headed into the fourth quarter up, 2-0.
Giordano opened the fourth quarter with a save before senior Jessica Evans (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) forced Schaefer to make two saves. A senior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) shot was stopped by Schaefer in the 55th minute and a sophomore Kate Lynne Conklin (Greenvale, N.Y./Franklin Pierce University) shot was stopped by Galison, keeping the score 2-0. Mercy scored on the final play of the game when Stella scored following a junior Samantha Trickel (Ottsville, Pa./Palisades) corner. Following the corner, graduate student Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had her shot stopped by Galison before Stella put it home to make it 2-1. However, time ran out on the Mavericks and STAC earned the 2-1 win.
STAC held a 13-9 edge in shots and an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held an 18-8 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 26th when they play at Franklin Pierce at 12 p.m.
