NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 29, 2024) – Despite a game-high seven saves from freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), the Mercy University women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision at Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.
The Mavericks (8-7-2) have dropped three games in a row and fall to the Owls (6-5-5) for the first time since 2012.
Mercy was led by Becker who made a game-high seven saves to take the loss. Senior Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J./University of Bridgeport) and sophomore Ella Gallino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) both had two shots and one shot on goal.
Southern Connecticut State was led by Alexie Rosado and Nicky Deslauriers who both scored two goals. Kaelen Fabry played the first half in goal and made four saves to earn the win.
Junior Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) recorded the game's first shot on goal in the 17th minute and Becker made a pair of saves in the 19th minute to keep the game scoreless. Washington forced Fabry to make another save in the 23rd minute, keeping the score 0-0.
The Owls scored the game's first goal in the 26th minute when Rosado found the back of the net, off an assist from Sydney Myers, to make it 1-0. Deslauriers made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute, following a Caileigh Driscoll assist. Deslauriers scored the final goal of the half in the final minute of play, firing home a Myers rebound that was originally stopped by Becker, giving Southern Connecticut State a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Rosado capped off the scoring for the Owls in the 60th minute when she made it 4-0 following a Myers assist. Senior Elizabeth Bowles (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers Montessori Academy) recorded the Mavericks' lone shot on goal in the half, but Mercy was unable to score, and the Owls earned the 4-0 win.
Southern Connecticut State held a 19-10 edge in shots and an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. The Owls held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 2nd when they host STAC at 2:30 p.m.
