UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2024) – Despite three Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy University baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to ECC foe No. 16 Molloy University on Sunday afternoon at Mitchel Field.
The Mavericks (14-23, 4-8 ECC) have lost 11 of their last 12 games, while the Lions (26-9, 12-3 ECC) sweep the season series with Mercy.
Mercy was led by freshman Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 3-for-4 with a run. Graduate student Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 1-for-4 with a run scored, becoming the second Maverick in program history to record 200 career hits. Sophomore John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 1-for-4 with a run and graduate student Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) had an RBI. Sophomore Riley Williams (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket) allowed two runs in six innings with five strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Junior Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) pitched 2.0 innings with one earned run allowed to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Matt Yip who went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. JC Kiss allowed three runs in 8.0 innings to earn the win and Mike Knapp tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.
The score remained 0-0 until the third inning when Mercy scored a run to take a 1-0 lead. Caballero led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Glennerster ground out to shortstop to make it 1-0.
Mercy scored another run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Nisco singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Scaperotti RBI single to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.
Molloy recorded a run in the sixth inning when Anthony Manisero homered to left field to make it 2-1.
Yip hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give the Lions a 3-2 lead. Mercy answered with a run in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 3-3. Caballero and Giblin singled to lead off the inning and Ashline later brought home Giblin on a double down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3.
Molloy took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth on a Joe Burriesci RBI single.
Mercy could not score in the top of the ninth, giving Molloy the 4-3 win.
Mercy had nine hits and one error and Molloy had 10 hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 19th when they play at Lincoln at 3 p.m.
