Nisco Homers as Baseball Plays at No. 6 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Apr. 6, 2024) – Despite a home run from sophomore John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) in game two, the Mercy University baseball team dropped 8-2 and 8-1 decisions to No. 6 Millersville University on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Park.

The Mavericks (13-17) have dropped five games in a row, while the Marauders (27-5) have won eight games in a row.

Game 1: Millersville 8, Mercy 2

Millersville scored five runs in the bottom of the first on five hits and one Mercy error to take a 6-0 lead.

The Mavericks plated both of their runs in the top of the second to make it 6-2. Junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) walked to lead off the inning and graduate student Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) singled to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch advanced both runners to second and third before a junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) groundout brought home Sanders to make it 6-1. Junior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) later singled home Glennerster to make it 6-2.

The Marauders added a run in the second and third innings to take an 8-2 lead.

Mercy was unable to score again, and Millersville earned the 8-2 game one win.

Mercy was led by Hoti who went 1-for-3 with an RBI and by Nisco who went 1-for-3. Glennerster went 1-for-3 with a run and freshman Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) allowed eight runs in 2.2 innings to take the loss. Junior Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Millersville was led by Jimmy Kirk who went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Carson Kulina allowed two runs in five innings to earn the win.

Mercy had three hits and two errors and Millersville had 10 hits and two errors.

Game 2: Millersville 8, Mercy 1

Millersville scored three runs in the first, two runs in the second and one run in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-0 lead.

Mercy scored their lone run in the top of the sixth to make it 7-1. With two outs in the inning, Nisco hit a solo home run to left field.

The Marauders recorded a run in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-1 lead.

The Mavericks were unable to score in the top of the seventh, giving Millersville the 8-1 win.

Mercy was led by Nisco who went 1-for-1 with a home run and an RBI and by Glennerster who went 1-for-2. Scaperotti went 1-for-2 and graduate student John Gillespie (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) allowed five runs in 2.0 innings to take the loss.

Millersville was led by Keegan Soltis who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Conor Cook allowed no runs in five innings to earn the win.

Mercy had three hits and one error and Millersville had 11 hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Millersville for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
