Three Mavericks Record an RBI as Baseball Plays at No. 6 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Apr. 7, 2024) – Despite three different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy University baseball team dropped 10-1 and 3-2 decisions to No. 6 Millersville University on Sunday afternoon at Cooper Park.

The Mavericks (13-19) have dropped seven games in a row, while the Marauders (29-5) have won 10 games in a row.

Game 1: Millersville 10, Mercy 1

Millersville scored four runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.

The score remained 6-0 until the top of the sixth when Mercy scored a run to make it 6-1. Freshmen Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) and Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) led off the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) then singled up the middle, scoring Scaperotti to make it 6-1.

The Marauders scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-1 lead.

Mercy went down in order in the top of the seventh, giving Millersville the 10-1 game one win.

Mercy was led by Engmann who went 2-for-3 and by Gonzalez who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Scaperotti went 2-for-2 with a run and graduate student Ryan Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) allowed five earned runs in 2.0 innings to take the loss.

Millersville was led by Sam Morris who went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Alex Mykut allowed one run in six innings to earn the win.

Mercy had five hits and one error and Millersville had 10 hits and no errors.

Game 2: Millersville 3, Mercy 2

A pitcher's duel broke out between Mercy starter senior Ryan Rozinski (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) and Millersville starter Zack Tukis. The duo combined to toss four shutout innings. The Mavericks broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) singled and junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) doubled to put runners on second and third. Sophomore John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Sanders to make it 1-0. Freshman Joey Bodin (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) then grounded out to second, scoring Caballero to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.

Millersville answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2-2.

The score remained tied at 2-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh. Amani Jones hit a walk-off RBI double, scoring Justin Taylor to give the Marauders a 3-2 game two win.

Mercy was led by Bodin who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and by Caballero who went 1-for-3 with a run. Sanders went 1-for-2 with a run and Engmann went 1-for-4. Sophomore Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 1-for-3 and Scaperotti went 1-for-1. Rozinski pitched five innings with two runs and two hits allowed to go with five strikeouts to take a no-decision. Sophomore Riley Williams (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket) allowed one run in 1.1 innings to take the loss.

Millersville was led by Jones who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Evan Rishell pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

Mercy had seven hits and one error and Millersville had four hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 9th when they host Saint Rose at 3 p.m.
