DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2024) – Powered by a career-high four RBI from freshman Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel), the Mercy University baseball team earned an 11-6 win over The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (14-19) snap a seven-game losing streak, while the Golden Knights (11-14) have dropped five games in a row.
Mercy was led by Scaperotti who went 2-for-6 with a game-high four RBI. Junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Caballero recorded his 100th career run scored and now has 101 for his career. He becomes the eighth Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Graduate student Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 1-for-2 with an RBI and junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Freshman Joey Bodin (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) went 1-for-5 with an RBI and sophomore Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 1-for-3 with two runs. Sophomore John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 1-for-5. Sophomore Brian Zbytniewski (Utica, N.Y./Whitesboro) allowed one run in 1.1 innings to earn a no-decision. Sophomore Ryan Ehret (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate win. Sophomore Riley Williams (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn his second save of the season.
Saint Rose was led by Nathan Toms who went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Casey Gunnip allowed two earned runs in three innings to take the loss.
The Golden Knights scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Gonzalez reached on an error by the shortstop and scored on a Caballero triple down the right field line to tie the game at 1-1. Caballero later scored on a wild pitch to give Mercy a 2-1 lead.
The score remained 2-1 until the fourth inning when Mercy scored four runs to take a 6-1 lead. Goins led off the inning with a single and stole second before advancing to third after Bodin reached on an error by the third baseman. Freshman Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) then walked to load the bases before Scaperotti doubled to left center, scoring Goins and Bodin to make it 4-1. Giblin then singled home Engmann to make it 5-1 and Gonzalez singled home Giblin to give Mercy a 6-1 lead.
Saint Rose scored a run in the top of the fifth to make it 6-2. The Mavericks answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 9-2 lead. Nisco singled to lead off the inning and later scored after Scaperotti reached on a fielder's choice to make it 7-2. Goins later scored on a wild pitch to give Mercy an 8-2 lead and Scaperotti scored on a passed ball to make it 9-2.
The Golden Knights scored three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to make it 9-6.
Mercy scored two runs in the eighth inning to take an 11-6 lead. Caballero singled to lead off the inning and scored on a Bodin RBI single to left field, making it 10-6. Scaperotti singled home Bodin later in the inning to give Mercy an 11-6 lead.
Williams pitched a scoreless ninth inning to give Mercy the 11-6 win.
Mercy had 10 hits and no errors and Saint Rose had nine hits and three errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 12th when they play at Molloy at 3 p.m.
