Scaperotti Pitches 8.1 Strong Innings and Ramirez Has Team-High Two RBI as Baseball Faces D'Youville

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 3, 2024) – Despite 8.1 strong innings on the mound from freshman Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) in game one and a team-high two RBI in game two from graduate student Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose), the Mercy University baseball team dropped 3-1 and 8-5 decisions to ECC foe D'Youville University on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (19-28, 9-13 ECC) have dropped five games in a row, while the Saints (28-17, 17-5 ECC) have won 10 games in a row.

Game 1: D'Youville 3, Mercy 1

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Mercy scored a run to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) singled and stole second before advancing to third on an error by the catcher. Junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Gonzalez to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.

Scaperotti held the Saints scoreless until the top of the ninth. D'Youville scored three runs on three hits to take a 3-1 lead. Mercy could not score in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Saints the 3-1 win.

Mercy was led by Caballero who went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 1-for-3 and graduate student Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y./Mount Saint Mary College), sophomore John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow), junior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and Gonzalez all went 1-for-4. Scaperotti allowed three runs with seven strikeouts in 8.1 innings to take the loss.

D'Youville was led by Hunter Nowak who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Zach Penner pitched a scoreless inning of relief to earn the win. Samuel Worthen tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.

Mercy had six hits and no errors and D'Youville had six hits and five errors.

Game 2: D'Youville 8, Mercy 5

D'Youville scored a run in the third inning and another in the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Mercy answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. Graduate student Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) singled and later scored on a Ramirez RBI triple to make it 2-1. Nolasco then singled home Ramirez to even the score at 2-2.

The Mavericks took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs to take a 4-2 lead. Nisco led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Hoti RBI single to make it 3-2. Ramirez later singled home Hoti to give the Mavericks a 4-2 lead.

D'Youville scored six runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead at 8-4. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-5. Caballero doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a graduate student Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) groundout to make it 8-5. The Mavericks were unable to score again, and the Saints earned the 8-5 game two win.

Mercy was led by Ramirez who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and by Caballero and Nisco who both went 3-for-4 with a run. Nolasco went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Giblin went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Glennerster went 1-for-4 with a run and Gonzalez went 1-for-3. Hoti went 1-for-2 with an RBI and senior Ryan Rozinski (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) allowed five runs in 6.1 innings with four strikeouts to take the loss. Rozinski recorded his 100th career strikeout.

D'Youville was led by Alec Boucher who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Connor Joedicke pitched 1.2 innings with one run allowed to earn the win. Worthen recorded the final out of the game to earn the save.

Mercy had 13 hits and one error and D'Youville had 12 hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host D'Youville for Senior Day at 3:30 p.m.
