Giordano and McClure Combine for Seven Saves as Field Hockey Plays at No. 8 Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 11, 2024) – Despite a combined seven saves from senior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and freshman Kaylise McClure (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and a defensive save from junior Reagan Lane (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 8 Bloomsburg University on Wednesday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium.

The Mavericks (1-1) fall to the Huskies (4-0) for the second straight time.

Mercy was led by Giordano who made a game-high four saves in 38:50 minutes of action to take the loss. McClure made three saves in 21:10 minutes of action in her first collegiate game. Lane recorded her first defensive save of the season and freshman Madison Brefka (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) had a shot on goal.

Bloomsburg was led by Aydan McFarland who had a game-high two goals with an assist. Jackie Nevel made one save to earn the shutout win.

The game remained scoreless until the 8th minute of play when Kate Ferguson scored following a McFarland assist to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Giordano made two saves before Bella Culp scored on a penalty stroke in the 12th minute to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Bloomsburg headed into the second quarter with a 2-0 lead.

Giordano made two more saves in the second quarter and Lane had a defensive save to keep the score 2-0 heading into halftime.

McFarland made it 3-0 in the 33rd minute on a penalty stroke goal and Genna Bush followed with a goal in the 34th minute to give Bloomsburg a 4-0 lead. Jordan Bond gave the Huskies a 5-0 lead with a goal in the 39th minute and Bloomsburg headed into the fourth quarter up, 5-0.

McFarland scored again in the 51st minute to make it 6-0 and Lexy Freed netted the final Bloomsburg goal in the 58th minute to give the hosts a 7-0 lead. Brefka recorded the Mavericks lone shot on goal in the final minute of play, but Nevel came up with the save, to preserve the shutout win for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg held a 20-4 edge in shots and a 15-1 edge in shots on goal. The Huskies also held a 12-4 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 14th when they host D'Youville at 11 a.m.
