FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2024) – Despite a game-high-tying three saves from freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), the Mercy University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon at Queens College.
The Mavericks (0-2) start 0-2 for the first time since 2011 and fall to the Penmen (1-0-1) for the second straight year.
Mercy was led by Becker who had a game-high-tying three saves to take the loss. Junior Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) had two shots on goal and freshman Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) also added a shot on goal.
Southern New Hampshire was led by Carly Schofield and Nida Orloff who both scored. Claudia Keith made a game-high-tying three saves to earn the shutout win.
Becker made her first save of the game in the 6th minute to keep the game scoreless. Dixon recorded back-to-back shots on goal in the 16th and 17th minutes, but Keith came up with the stops and the game stayed 0-0.
Metzger fired the Mavericks' last shot on goal of the game in the 33rd minute with Keith making her final save to keep the game tied at 0-0. Orloff gave the Penmen a 1-0 lead with less than 30 seconds left in the half after firing home a rebound of her original shot that was blocked. Southern New Hampshire held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Penmen made it 2-0 in the 54th minute when Schofield scored, off an Alyssa Anderson assist. Mercy was unable to find the back of the net and Southern New Hampshire earned the 2-0 win.
Southern New Hampshire held an 8-7 edge in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 11th when they host Georgian Court at 3 p.m.
