COLONIA, N.J. (Jan. 20, 2025) – Mercy University men's basketball sophomore Shedrach Makanjuola (Boston, Mass./Quincy College) has been named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Nathan Robertson (Boston, Mass./The Winchendon School) has been named Rookie of the Week for the third time. Sophomore Derek Long (Milford, Conn./Deerfield Academy) has been tabbed to the Honor Roll for Week 10.
Makanjuola averaged a double-double with 11.5 points and a team-high 12.0 rebounds per game to go with a team-high 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. The sophomore added 2.5 assists per game and had a double-double in one game. The forward opened the week with eight points, a game-high 13 rebounds (10 defensive), five steals, three blocks, and two assists in the 64-62 win over Queens on Wednesday. Makanjuola assisted on the game-winning basket at the buzzer and came up with a key steal at the end of the game that gave Mercy the chance to win in regulation. The sophomore ended the week with a double-double by way of 15 points and 11 rebounds (five defensive) to go with three assists at Molloy on Saturday.
Robertson averaged a team-high 16.5 points and 4.5 assists per game with 1.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game as Mercy went 1-1 on the week. The freshman opened the week with 14 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal in the 64-62 win over Queens on Wednesday, which included the game-winning basket at the buzzer. Robertson ended the week with 19 points, six assists, two rebounds, two steals, and one block at Molloy on Saturday.
Long averaged 11.5 points per game on 50.0 percent shooting as Mercy went 1-1 on the week. The junior opened the week with 11 points in the win over Queens on Wednesday. The guard ended the week with 12 points at Molloy on Saturday.
The award is the third for Makanjuola this season, the sixth for Robertson and the first for Long. Mercy has now earned 19 awards on the year.
