MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 23, 2025) – Despite an RBI from sophomore Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), the Mercy University baseball team dropped a 9-1 decision to Bentley University on Sunday morning.
The Mavericks (5-4) see their three-game winning streak come to an end and fall to the Falcons (5-2) for the second straight year.
Mercy was led by Engmann who recorded his first RBI of the season. Senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 1-for-3 and senior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) went 1-for-4 with a run. Junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 1-for-3 and freshman Anthony Altobelli (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) went 1-for-1 with his first collegiate hit. Sophomore Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) made the start on the mound and went 6.2 innings with four earned runs allowed and five strikeouts to take his second loss of the season. Freshman Sammy Mendez (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Bentley was led by Stan DeMartinis III who went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Ryan Glupe allowed one run in 5.0 innings to earn the win.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Hoti led off the inning with a single and later scored on an Engmann sacrifice fly.
Bentley evened the score at 1-1 in the third inning on a Jared Berardino RBI double.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a David VanderZouwen RBI single.
Bentley tacked on a run in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
A DeMartinis III two-run home run in the seventh inning gave the Falcons a 5-1 lead.
Bentley scored four runs in the eighth inning on four hits to take a 9-1 lead.
Mercy could not score in the eighth or ninth innings, giving Bentley the 9-1 win.
Mercy had four hits and one error and Bentley had 16 hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, February 27th when they host Adelphi at 3 p.m.
