Engmann Records Team-High Three Home Runs and Seven RBI as Baseball Sweeps Bloomfield in Home Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2025) – Powered by a team-high three home runs and seven RBI on the day from sophomore Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), the Mercy University baseball team earned 18-2 and 20-0 wins over Bloomfield College in their home opener on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (7-4) have won six of their last seven meetings against the Bears (0-4) and continue their best start since 2021. Mercy earns a sweep in their home opener for the second straight year.

Game 1: Mercy 18, Bloomfield 2

Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a junior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) RBI single. Nisco later scored after a throwing error by the catcher.

The Mavericks exploded for six runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead. Senior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) reached on an error by the shortstop before Engmann hit a two-run home run to give Mercy a 4-0 lead. Junior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) later plated Jemison on a groundout to give Mercy a 5-0 lead and junior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) singled home Nisco to make it 6-0. Senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) singled home Ashline to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead and junior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) singled home Gonzalez to make it 8-0.

Mercy tacked on three more runs in the third inning to take an 11-0 lead. Nisco singled home junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) to make it 9-0 and Bernard Jr. hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Jemison to make it 10-0. Ashline then doubled home Nisco to give the Mavericks an 11-0 lead.

Bloomfield scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning to make it 11-2. Mercy scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 15-2 lead. Junior Anthony Dolce (North Salem, N.Y./Westchester CC) recorded a two-run double to make it 13-2 and Engmann followed with a home run to give the Mavericks a 15-2 lead.

Mercy scored three more runs in the sixth inning to take an 18-2 lead. Dolce drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 16-2 and freshman Anthony Altobelli (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) drew another bases-loaded walk to make it 17-2. Jemison brought home the final run of the game on a fielder's choice, giving Mercy an 18-2 lead.

Senior Gaetano Pennisi (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the game one win.

Mercy was led by Engmann who went 3-for-5 with his first two career home runs with a game-high four RBI. Ashline went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Nisco went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Jemison went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI and Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with an RBI. McAdams went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Dolce went 1-for-1 with three RBI. Junior Diego Wirz (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) pitched 4.0 shutout innings with three strikeouts and just two hits allowed to earn his second win of the season. Senior Will Sullo (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Rockland CC) pitched 2.0 innings with no earned runs allowed and three strikeouts. Pennisi recorded one strikeout in a scoreless inning of relief.

Bloomfield was led by Charles Anderson who went 1-for-2. Mirquis Erazo allowed two earned runs in 2.0 innings to take the loss.

Mercy had 14 hits and one error and Bloomfield had five hits and three errors.

Game 2: Mercy 20, Bloomfield 0 (5 Innings)

After a scoreless first inning, the Mavericks scored 11 runs in the second inning to take an 11-0 lead. Ashline walked and Gonzalez doubled before senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) homered to left field, giving Mercy a 3-0 lead. McAdams and senior Connor Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) then walked before Engmann hit another home run to make it 6-0. Gonzalez later recorded a two-run single to give Mercy an 8-0 lead and Sanders doubled home Gonzalez to make it 9-0. Ruland brought home the final two runs of the inning on a two-run double to make it 11-0.

The Mavericks scored three runs in the third inning to take a 14-0 lead. Nisco walked and Bernard Jr. singled before Ashline homered to give Mercy a 14-0 lead.

Mercy tacked on six runs in the fifth inning before the game was called due to darkness and temperature. Bernard Jr. tripled before Ashline doubled to make it 15-0. Senior Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) later singled home Ashline to make it 16-0 and Ruland singled home two more runs to give Mercy an 18-0 lead. Freshman Matthew Hesselbirg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Newfield) singled home Asaro to make it 19-0 and Goins plated the final run after reaching on an error to make it 20-0.

Mercy was led by Ashline who went 2-for-3 with his third home run of the season and four RBI. Engmann went 1-for-2 with his third home run of the day and three RBI and Sanders went 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season and four RBI. Jemison went 1-for-2 and Hesselbirg went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Nisco went 1-for-2 with two runs and Bernard Jr. went 2-for-4 with two runs. Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Asaro went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Ruland went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Senior Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) pitched 4.0 shutout innings with just one hit allowed and five strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. Junior Ryan Ehret (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Bloomfield was led by Anderson who went 1-for-2. Elian Estrella allowed eight runs in 1.0 inning to take the loss.

Mercy had 16 hits and no errors and Bloomfield had two hits and two errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 4th when they host Southern Connecticut State at 3:15 p.m.
