DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2025) – Powered by a game-high two RBI from junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) and senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) and seven strong innings on the mound from freshman Andre Jenkins (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy), the Mercy University baseball team earned an 8-7 win over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (15-12, 2-2 ECC) have won two games in a row and earn a season series split with the Spartans (5-16, 2-2 ECC).
Mercy was led by Goins who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and by Gonzalez who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Junior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and junior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) went 1-for-5. Jenkins pitched the first 7.0 innings with one earned run allowed and four strikeouts to earn his third win of the season. Junior Samuel Gil (Bronx, N.Y./St. Bonaventure University) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his team-leading seventh save of the season.
STAC was led by David Potenza who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Tom O'Neill allowed four runs in 3.0 innings to take the loss.
The Spartans scored three unearned runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1. Junior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a Goins infield single.
Mercy scored three runs in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Nisco was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Bernard Jr. doubled to put runners on second and third. Gonzalez later singled to center field, scoring Nisco and Bernard Jr. to tie the game at 3-3. Sanders later singled home Gonzalez to give the Mavericks a 4-3 lead.
The Mavericks tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to build a 6-3 lead. Goins singled to lead off the inning and scored on a Jemison triple to make it 5-3. Nisco then singled home Jemison to give Mercy a 6-3 lead.
Mercy added two more runs in the seventh inning to build an 8-3 lead. McAdams was hit by a pitch and Sanders singled before senior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field, scoring McAdams to make it 7-3. Goins then singled home Sanders, giving the Mavericks an 8-3 lead.
STAC scored four runs in the eighth inning to cut the Mavericks' lead to one, 8-7. However, Gil pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game, giving Mercy an 8-7 win.
Mercy had 12 hits and two errors and STAC had seven hits and one error.
