Jemison and Gonzalez Record an RBI in Game Two as Baseball Plays at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 9, 2025) – Despite an RBI from sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) and senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) in game two, the Mercy University baseball team dropped 8-0 and 6-2 decisions at Pace University on Sunday afternoon at Peter X. Finnerty Field.

The Mavericks (8-8) have dropped four of their last five games, while the Setters (5-5) improve to .500 on the year.

Game 1: Pace 8, Mercy 0

Pace took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Brayden Sweppenhiser RBI single.

The Setters scored two more runs in the fourth inning on a Luke Rivara two-run home run to make it 3-0.

A Mason Baronian RBI single in the fifth inning made it 4-0 and a Matthew Franco RBI double gave the Setters a 5-0 lead. A Dominic Rivara three-run home run in the fifth inning put Pace up, 8-0.

Mercy was unable to score and Pace earned the 8-0 game one win.

Mercy was led by Jemison who went 1-for-4 and by junior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) who went 1-for-2. Junior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) went 1-for-2 and Gonzalez went 1-for-3. Sophomore Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) pitched the first 4.2 innings with seven runs allowed to take the loss. Junior Ryan Ehret (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Pace was led by Dominic Rivara who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Ryan Degnan pitched 5.0 shutout innings to earn the win.

Mercy had four hits and no errors and Pace had 12 hits and no errors.

Game 2: Pace 6, Mercy 2

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Mercy scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Gonzalez sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Jemison later singled home senior Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.

Pace scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.

The Setters scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Mercy was unable to score in the seventh inning, giving Pace the 6-2 game two win.

Mercy was led by Goins who went 2-for-3 with a run and by Jemison who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Asaro went 1-for-2 with a run and junior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) went 1-for-3. Freshman Matthew Hesselbirg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Newfield) went 1-for-3 and freshman Andre Jenkins (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) pitched the first 4.2 innings with two runs allowed to take a no-decision. Freshman Ryan DiNapoli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) allowed two runs in 0.1 innings to take the loss.

Pace was led by Luke Rivara who went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Anthony Apollaro pitched 3.0 innings of relief to earn the win.

Mercy had six hits and one error and Pace had 10 hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday when they host Holy Family at 3 p.m.
