Ashline Homers Twice as Baseball Earns 10-5 Win Over New Haven

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2025) – Powered by a game-high two home runs from junior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central), the Mercy University baseball team earned a 10-5 win over regionally-ranked University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (25-19) have won four of their last five games and defeat the Chargers (20-14) for the first time since 2019.

Mercy was led by Ashline who went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI. Ashline now has seven home runs on the season. Junior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Nisco now has a team-high eight home runs on the year. Junior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Bernard Jr. now has four home runs this season. Sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) went 2-for-5 and senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 3-for-4. Senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 1-for-4 and junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 2-for-3. Freshman Sammy Mendez (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) allowed three runs in 2.0 innings to take a no-decision in his first collegiate start. Junior Diego Wirz (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) allowed just one run in 4.1 innings to earn his fourth win of the year. Freshman Gordon Votruba (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and freshman Ryan DiNapoli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) recorded the final two outs of the game.

New Haven was led by Joe Frazzetta who went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Cole Gibson allowed two runs in 1.2 innings of relief to take the loss.

The Chargers scored three runs in the second inning and one run in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Mercy answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2. Jemison singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Bernard Jr. two-run home run to left center.

The Mavericks took the lead for good in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to take a 5-4 lead. Sanders was hit by a pitch and Goins singled to put runners on first and second. Nisco later hit a three-run home run to left center, scoring Sanders and Goins to give Mercy the 5-4 lead.

Mercy tacked on a run in the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Ashline doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a junior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) sacrifice fly to right field.

The Mavericks recorded two runs in the seventh inning to build an 8-4 lead. Ashline homered to left field to lead off the inning, making it 7-4. Gonzalez then tripled before scoring on a senior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) sacrifice fly, giving Mercy an 8-4 lead.

Mercy scored two more runs in the eighth inning to make it 10-4. Nisco singled to lead off the inning and scored on an Ashline two-run home run to left field.

New Haven scored a run in the top of the ninth to make it 10-5, but DiNapoli came in and recorded a fly out and groundout to end the game, giving Mercy the 10-5 win.

Mercy had 15 hits and no errors and New Haven had 10 hits and one error.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday when they play at Queens at 3 p.m.
