RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Powered by the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute from graduate student Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin), off an assist from sophomore Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), the Mercy University Women's Soccer Team earned a 2-1 win at Felician University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (4-0) start 4-0 for the first time since 2013 and defeat the Golden Falcons (2-1-1) for the second straight year.
Mercy took an early lead with a first-half goal, while Felician equalized shortly after. The decisive goal came in the second half, sealing the win for the Mavericks.
In a tightly contested first half, Mercy and Felician both found the net early, resulting in a 1-1 deadlock going into halftime. Freshman Gracie DiPalo (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) put the Mavericks on the scoreboard in the fifth minute with an assist from junior Ella Gallino (Middlebury, N.Y./Pomperaug), capitalizing on the team's early attacking pressure that included six corner kicks. Felician responded swiftly with a goal by Kate Braun just one minute later. Sophomore Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) recorded a crucial save to keep the match level.
Mercy secured a 2-1 victory with a decisive goal in the second half. Rosa scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, assisted by Metzger. The Mavericks' offense was active throughout, taking ten shots with five on target. Felician's goalkeeper, Isabella Riollano, made six saves, keeping the game competitive until the final whistle.
Rosa recorded her first goal of the season. DiPalo contributed her second goal of the season and led the team with four shots, three of which were on goal. Metzger added her team-leading fourth assist and managed to take two shots, with one on target and Gallino dished out her first assist of the season. Becker made one save and played the full 90 minutes to earn the win.
Riollano stood out for Felician with seven saves, facing 18 shots and conceding two goals. Kayleigh Seeton contributed to the team's offense by providing their only assist. Offensively, Braun made an impact by scoring Felician's only goal while taking two shots, both on target.
Mercy held an 18-3 edge in shots, a 9-2 edge in shots on goal and an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
In their next game, Mercy will host Molloy University on September 20 in their ECC opener. The match is set for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., as the Mavericks look to capitalize on their home advantage.
