COLONIA, N.J. – Mercy University Softball freshman Juliana Abbene (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) has been named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Softball Rookie of the Week, and freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) has been tabbed to the Honor Roll for Week Four.
Abbene went 1-0 in her first two collegiate appearances with a 0.00 ERA and eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched with just two hits allowed. The freshman began her career tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout against Wayne State on Friday. Abbene ended the week pitching 4.0 shutout innings of relief with seven strikeouts and just one hit allowed to earn her first collegiate win against Post on Saturday.
Jackson hit .375 (3-for-8) with a team-high-tying three RBI to go with one double as Mercy opened their season in Florida with four games. The freshman opened her career going 1-for-2 against Minnesota State on Friday. The outfielder then went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a double in the win over Post on Saturday. Jackson ended the week going 1-for-3 with an RBI against Purdue Northwest on Saturday.
The awards are the first for both this season and the first for Mercy this season.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Saint Michael's at 10 a.m. and Ohio Dominican at 12:15 p.m. in Florida.
