BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Powered by a touchdown pass from junior Kate Lynne Conklin (Greenvale, N.Y./North Shore), a receiving touchdown from sophomore Madison Brefka (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) and a rushing touchdown from sophomore Jaime Stella (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack), the Mercy University Women's Flag Football Team earned its first-ever win with a 14-8 win at Long Island University on Tuesday night.
The Mavericks (1-5) earn their first win in their first season, while the Sharks (0-1) drop their first game.
Conklin led the Mavericks with 75 yards passing and 59 yards rushing, throwing a 46-yard touchdown pass to Brefka. Brefka recorded three catches for 56 yards, 17 yards rushing and four flag pulls. Stella added 18 yards rushing with an 11-yard touchdown run. Senior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) had one catch for 19 yards, three flag pulls and a game-high two sacks. Sophomore Kaylise McClure (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) contributed four flag pulls and one sack, and freshman Gwendolyn Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) finished with four flag pulls. Stella and freshman Anna Palmieri (Queens, N.Y.) each added one flag pull.
LIU was led by Marisa Cacciuttolo who had a game-high 173 yards passing with one touchdown pass. E'lise Lyrse had a game-high 84 yards receiving and a game-high-tying four flag pulls.
Mercy had 160 total yards with 75 yards passing and 85 yards rushing. LIU had 172 total yards with 173 yards passing and -1 yards rushing.
Head Coach Mike Perrota and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 31st when they play at Eastern University at 5 p.m.
