Ashline Homers as Baseball Hosts Molloy for Doubleheader

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Despite a home run from senior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) in game one, the Mercy University Baseball Team dropped 4-2 and 3-1 decisions to ECC foe Molloy University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (11-11, 5-3 ECC) see their five-game winning streak come to an end, while the Lions (11-7, 6-2 ECC) have beaten Mercy three straight times.

Game 1: Molloy 4, Mercy 2

Sophomore Gordon Votruba (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Molloy starter JC Kiss combined to toss five shutout innings to keep the game scoreless heading to the sixth inning. A two-run home run by Charlie Imhof in the sixth inning gave Molloy a 2-0 lead.

The Lions added two runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-0 lead, highlighted by a Steve Mulqueen home run.

The Mavericks inched closer with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-2. Sophomore Matthew Hesselbirg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Newfield) walked to lead off the inning and scored on an Ashline two-run home run to left field.

Mercy was unable to score in the eighth and ninth innings, giving Molloy the 4-2 game one win.

Mercy was led by Ashline who went 1-for-4 with his second home run of the season and two RBI. Junior Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) went 1-for-3 and sophomore Anthony Altobelli (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) went 1-for-4. Votruba allowed two runs in 6.0 innings to take the loss. Sophomore Geneo Savoca (Albany, N.Y./University at Albany) allowed no earned runs in 3.0 innings.

Molloy was led by Imhof who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run. Kiss allowed two runs in 7.0 innings to earn the win. Jayden Patel pitched 2.0 shutout innings to earn the save.

Mercy had three hits and one error and Molloy had 11 hits and one error.

Game 2: Molloy 3, Mercy 1

Molloy took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a John Franco RBI single.

The Lions added two runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles from Mike Sweeney and Sean Welsh to take a 3-0 lead.

Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 3-1. Hesselbirg singled with one out and graduate student Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) singled to put runners on first and second. Following a strikeout that made two outs in the inning, Scaperotti singled home Hesselbirg to make it 3-1. A groundout to first ended the game with the tying runs on base.

Mercy was led by Scaperotti who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Altobelli went 1-for-2 and Savoca, Hesselbirg and Hoti all went 1-for-3. Sophomore Ryan DiNapoli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) allowed three runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss. Freshman Dylan Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) recorded one out and seniors Samuel Gil (Bronx, N.Y./St. Bonaventure University) and Ryan Ehret (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Molloy was led by Welsh who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Mike Knapp pitched a complete game with one run allowed to earn the win.

Mercy had five hits and no errors and Molloy had six hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 24th when they host Felician at 3 p.m.
