Koch Homers and Records Team-High Four RBI as Baseball Faces Staten Island in Doubleheader

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Despite a home run and a team-high four RBI on the day from junior Dylan Koch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Pace University), the Mercy University Baseball Team dropped 10-9 and 6-0 decisions to ECC foe College of Staten Island on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (22-21, 13-12 ECC) see their six-game winning streak against the Dolphins (13-25, 8-17 ECC) come to an end.

Game 1: Staten Island 10, Mercy 9

Staten Island scored an unearned run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Mercy scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Graduate student Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and senior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) were hit by a pitch before Koch homered to center field, giving Mercy the lead.

The Dolphins scored a run in the third inning to make it 3-2.

Staten Island tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning on a Vincent Weigele home run.

The Mavericks retook the lead with two runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Goins singled and sophomore Geneo Savoca (Albany, N.Y./University at Albany) later walked. Senior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) then doubled home Goins to make it 4-3 and senior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) brought home Savoca on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.

Staten Island added a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-4.

Mercy tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Hoti was hit by a pitch and Goins later singled before Hoti scored on a balk to make it 6-4. Koch then singled home Goins to make it 7-4.

Staten Island scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-7 lead.

The Mavericks scored a run in the seventh inning to make it 10-8. Nisco, Ashline and senior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) singled to load the bases before junior Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Nisco.

Mercy added another run in the ninth inning to make it 10-9. Nisco and Ashline both singled and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Nisco later scored on a Bernard Jr. sacrifice fly to make it 10-9. A groundout to third ended the game, giving the Dolphins the 10-9 game-one win.

Mercy was led by Koch who went 2-for-5 with his third home run of the season and a team-high four RBI. Nisco went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ashline went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bernard Jr. went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Goins went 2-for-3 with three runs. Sophomore Andre Jenkins (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) allowed five earned runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss. Sophomore Tate Van Alstyne (Chatham, N.Y./Southern New Hampshire University) allowed no earned runs in 3.0 innings of relief.

CSI was led by Jaden Waterman who went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI. Aidan Kielty allowed two runs in 1.2 innings to earn the win. Jack Kehoe pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

Mercy had 10 hits and two errors and Staten Island had 17 hits and one error.

Game 2: Staten Island 6, Mercy 0

CSI scored two runs in the second inning on a JJ Hunter home run and Brandon Bartick RBI double to take a 2-0 lead.

The Dolphins added a run in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead and added another in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 4-0.

CSI added two runs in the sixth inning to build a 6-0 lead.

Mercy went down in order in the seventh inning, giving CSI the 6-0 game-two win and the sweep.

Mercy was led by Koch, Goins and graduate student Connor Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) who all went 1-for-2. Ashline and Bernard Jr. both went 1-for-3. Savoca allowed four runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.

CSI was led by Weigele who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Nick Chiaia pitched 4.0 shutout innings of relief to earn the win.

Mercy had five hits and one error and Staten Island had seven hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, April 26th when they host Staten Island at 12 p.m.
