McClure Makes Game-High 19 Saves and Benvengo Scores as Field Hockey Hosts Adelphi

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Despite a game-high 19 saves from junior Kaylise McClure (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and a goal from senior Alyssa Benvengo (East Islip, N.Y./Molloy University), the Mercy University Field Hockey Team dropped a 10-1 decision to Adelphi University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (0-4) fall to 0-13 all-time against the Panthers (1-4).

Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute of action on an Isabelle Leclair goal. A Lana Mignon De Wet goal later made it 2-0 in the 5th minute, and McClure made five saves to close the quarter, keeping the score 2-0.

Julia Smith gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead in the 19th minute and De Wet and Jena Geels later scored to make it 5-0 in the 24th minute. Sydney Flores closed the half with a goal in the 26th minute to give Adelphi a 6-0 lead at halftime.

McClure opened the third quarter with five saves before De Wet scored again to make it 7-0 and Jody van Aardt added a goal in the 39th minute to give the visitors an 8-0 lead. McClure closed the quarter with four more saves as Adelphi headed to the fourth quarter up, 8-0.

Smith scored her second goal of the game in the 49th minute to make it 9-0 before Mercy scored in the 53rd minute to make it 9-1. Benvengo deflected in a freshman Addison Testa (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) shot attempt, getting the Mavericks on the scoreboard. An Emily Souke goal in the 59th minute capped off the scoring, giving Adelphi the 10-1 win.

Mercy was led by Benvengo who recorded her first goal of the season and by Testa who dished out her first collegiate assist. Sophomore Gwendolyn Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) and junior Adrianna Taynor (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) both had a defensive save and McClure made a game-high 19 saves in three quarters to take the loss. McClure recorded her 200th career save, becoming the fifth goalie in program history to reach the mark. Freshman Sarah Abbas (Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge) made three saves in her collegiate debut in the fourth quarter.

Adelphi was led by De Wet who had three goals and an assist. Tayla Szmak did not face a shot in the first half, earning the win.

Adelphi held a 43-5 edge in shots, a 34-4 edge in shots on goal and an 8-2 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 19th when they play at Franklin Pierce at 11 a.m.
