A long-time coach and successful golfer, Anthony T. “Tony” Macellaro was a staple in the golf community throughout the tri-state for decades. Macellaro helmed the men’s golf program at Mercy College for over 20 years. He led the likes of Chris Arone to win the 1985 Westchester Men’s Publinx Golf Championship and a 1984 runner-up finish. His guidance proved to be invaluable for Mercy in the 1990s, as the Flyers captured four New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships from 1992-95. His squads were considered the most prolific since the NYCAC’s formation in 1990.
Macellaro coached many strong, competitive regional golfers. Members of his first team in 1978 included Mark Sweeney, Mark McAvoy, Dave Hansen, Mark Damiano and Joe Drohan. Drohan knew what a special person Tony was and how he meant so much to the student-athletes on the golf team. Drohan referred to Coach Macellaro as the “salt of the Earth.”
Macellaro started playing golf at the age of 45 and quickly became an accomplished amateur player. He competed in numerous prestigious tournaments in the area and nationally at multiple levels, including victories in the 1965 National Amateur Tournament of Champions, 1976 New Jersey State Golf Association Senior Tournament, and 1979 M.B.A. Senior Tournament.
Macellaro passed away on November 9, 2009 at the age of 91. He proudly served his country during World War II, and was a proud member of the North White Plains Fire Department, attaining the rank of Assistant Chief. He is survived by his wife, Camella; children, Ronald and Rosemarie; daughter-in-law, Susan; his seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
