Mavericks Fall to NYIT, 85-70
The Mercy College men's basketball team was defeated by
East Coast Conference opponent NYIT tonight, 85-70. With the
loss, the Mavericks drop to 2-23, including 2-18 in the ECC, and
the Bears become 12-13 overall, and even their ECC record to
10-10.
NYIT started strong, going on a 16-4 run to begin the
game. The Mavericks, who never led in the game, were able to
cut the Bears' lead to as few as seven, but trailed 43-33
going into halftime.
To start the second half, a three-pointer by sophomore Colin Senior (Hackensack,
N.J./Hackensack) again put the Mavericks within seven
points, but that would be as close as they would get. NYIT
would lead by as many as 24 points, and would go on to take the
game 85-70.
Scoring for the Mavericks was led by senior Hasan Powell (Bridgeport,
Conn./Central), who has 18 points with ten
assists. Freshman Terrence Murchie (Franklin Square,
N.Y./Carey) had 12 points and tied for the game high
in rebounds, with seven boards. NYIT's Carl Kindborg
led all players with 21 points.
The Mavericks play their final game of the season on Feb. 26,
taking on Dowling College in the Mercy College Gym. Prior to
the game, Mercy will be honoring Desentrie Allen (Bridgeport, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral), Orlando Daniel (Bridgeport, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral), Manny
Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), Powell, and
Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./ Msgr. Scanlan) as part
of Senior Day. Additionally, Wilson will be
honored for recently achieving the 1,000 point mark.
